The floor is the whole-fruit signal. Every 200 g a day of fruit and vegetables tracks to roughly a tenth off all-cause mortality, climbing to about 800 g a day before it flattens 1. No one has isolated peaches alone, but stone fruit rides that signal, and most of its polyphenol load sits in or just under the skin, at two to three times the concentration of the flesh.
Whole fruit protects; juice does the opposite. The same cohort data tracks whole fruit to lower diabetes risk and the same fruit as juice to higher 2. The fiber matrix paces the sugar in; strip it and you've made yourself a soda.
The base habit is simple; the dose-specific extras are separate.
Bolt-ons, for whoever they fit. These use trial doses far bigger than casual eating. For sleep: 30 mL of tart cherry concentrate twice a day added about twenty-five minutes of sleep 3. Postmenopausal and worried about bone: five prunes a day for a year preserved hip density where controls lost about a percent 4. Training hard: two glasses of tart cherry juice a day around a race cut muscle soreness 5. Constipated: five prunes twice a day beat psyllium 6.
The arc. First week, the snack drawer loses interest: a ripe peach beats the pastry, and the fiber-paced sugar doesn't crater you at three 2. After about a month of apricots, skin tone moves a quarter-step warmer, measurable and read by other faces as healthy-looking 7. Over the decade, the whole-fruit signal does its quiet actuarial work — about a tenth off all-cause mortality per couple of daily servings 1. You earn that with a craving you'd have had anyway.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Careful: raw peaches, plums, and cherries trigger itchy-mouth oral allergy in many birch-pollen-allergic people (cooked is usually fine). Dried prunes and apricots are FODMAP-rich and flare IBS. Never crack the pits — the kernels contain amygdalin, which the body turns to cyanide. Sulfite-treated dried apricots can trigger bronchospasm in some asthmatics; buy the brown untreated ones.
Don't confuse these: sweet cherries at bedtime aren't the sleep result — that used concentrated sour Prunus cerasus at a hundred cherries' worth per dose 3. Cherries for gout are contested: observational data shows about a third lower flare risk 8, the strongest trial found nothing 9. Possibly helpful, not a treatment.

Stone Fruit in Season
In-season fresh stone fruit runs ~$2–4/lb in the US; frozen ~$3/lb year-round. A daily fruit habit in season displaces other snacks rather than adding net spend for most readers.
Eat fruit. The only friction is selecting ripe (yields slightly to thumb pressure, smells fragrant) and accepting the seasonal window for the best version.
Whole-fruit category signal is guideline-backed and replicated across 95 cohorts (Aune 2017). Stone-fruit-specific RCTs exist for bone (De Souza 2022, 12-month RCT, n=235), sleep (Howatson 2012 and replications), exercise recovery (Kuehl 2010), constipation (Attaluri 2011). The category is well-aligned in the clinical community; substance-specific RCTs are mostly on processed forms (concentrate, dried).
Inherits the whole-fruit category signal: Aune 2017 meta-analysis of 95 cohorts finds ~10–15% all-cause mortality reduction per 200 g/day of fruit+veg, dose-response to ~800 g/day. Stone fruit is not separately tested but is a fresh, low-energy, polyphenol-dense member of the category that drives the effect.
The whole-fruit cohort signal (Aune 2017) tracks long-term skin and aging trajectory through the polyphenol-antioxidant route; stone-fruit-specific aging trials don't exist. Real but slow contribution over months/years.
Layered modest effects within weeks: tart cherry concentrate adds ~25 min sleep time (Howatson 2012); 50 g/day prunes resolves chronic constipation more reliably than psyllium (Attaluri 2011); whole-fruit fiber matrix attenuates postprandial glucose. No single dramatic short-term shift.
Tart cherry juice concentrate (30 mL × 2/day × 7 days) added ~25 min total sleep time and lifted urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin in Howatson 2012; replicated across small trials. Effect is dose-dependent and species-specific — fresh sweet cherries near bedtime won't reproduce the concentrate dose.
Apricots are the densest fresh carotenoid load in the produce aisle (~1 mg β-carotene/100 g, 1.8 mg/100 g dried). Pezdirc 2016 showed measurable skin yellowness shift in 4 weeks on a high-carotenoid intervention; the effect is real but subtle and saturates fast.
No direct evidence base. The fiber matrix paces fructose absorption and avoids the glucose spike-crash that juice produces, but the absolute effect on day-to-day energy is small.
