Oysters carry the highest bioavailable zinc of any food: six of them deliver several times an adult's daily requirement, in a form the body absorbs cleanly 1, 2. Clams are the densest B12 source known — a single portion covers most of a week 1. Mussels add selenium and the omega-3 fats your body can't build from flax. All three carry iodine and haem iron too.
The catch is that shrimp has little of this. Oysters hold roughly 30 to 60 times its zinc; clams around 70 times its B12 1. Eating shrimp on Friday and calling shellfish covered captures almost none of the point.
The deficits it fills are common and silent. Low zinc dulls immunity, taste, and wound healing 3. B12 left low for years turns into a nerve damage that doesn't fully reverse 4. Selenium and iodine keep the thyroid running 5.
How fast, and how much, depends on where you started. If you were already replete, a weekly serving mostly tops up reserves. If you were quietly short, the change is real within weeks.

The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Mercury isn't the shellfish problem people assume. Bivalves and shrimp sit near the bottom of the FDA chart, below salmon and far below tuna 11.
The shrimp-cholesterol warning is dead. The 300 mg/day cap was retired from the U.S. guidelines a decade ago; saturated fat is the real lever 12.
The R-month rule is folklore. It predates refrigeration; Vibrio outbreaks now happen year-round 6. Your health status, not the month, decides whether raw is safe.
Cooked only, or skip the category: liver disease, haemochromatosis, kidney failure, active cancer, HIV, immunosuppression — raw V. vulnificus septicaemia kills roughly half who get it 13. Pregnant: cooked only 11. Shellfish allergy: test with an allergist.

Shellfish (bivalves, weekly)
Buying, steaming, or tinned-on-toast is trivial once integrated; the cognitive overhead of picking bivalves over shrimp is one-time.
Frozen mussels and clams run $4–8/lb; tinned smoked oysters $2–3 per tin; fresh oysters $1–3 each at a raw bar. A weekly serving sits well under $500/year for most readers.
Nutrient densities are USDA-documented; mechanisms of zinc, B12, selenium, and iodine function are established; cardiovascular substitution data is consistent across large cohorts (Mozaffarian & Rimm 2006). No head-to-head RCT of shellfish consumption keeps the rating below 5.
Zinc and B12 repletion produce clear functional changes within weeks in deficient adults — taste returns, wound healing speeds up, fatigue lifts, infection-free days increase (Prasad 2008, Stabler 2013, Mocchegiani & Malavolta 2008). In already-replete adults the felt change is modest.
Substituting seafood (including shellfish) for red and processed meat is associated with 15–35% lower CHD mortality in pooled cohort analyses (Mozaffarian & Rimm 2006); EPA/DHA delivery is meaningful (Mozaffarian & Wu 2011). Magnitude is solid but not transformative at typical 1–2 servings/week.
B12 and iron from bivalves drive correction of fatigue and anaemia-related lethargy in deficient adults — clams alone exceed weekly B12 needs in one serving (Stabler 2013, USDA FoodData Central). Clear less-fatigue effect in the deficient subset, smaller in already-replete.
Long-chain omega-3 incorporation into skin lipids, zinc-dependent collagen synthesis, and selenium's role as a glutathione-peroxidase cofactor combine for a real but slow contribution to skin and hair quality over months to years; not the reason you'd recommend it but a genuine cumulative effect (Mozaffarian & Wu 2011, Prasad 2008).
B12 supports myelin and cognitive function; chronic insufficiency produces brain fog and (over years) irreversible cognitive decline (Stabler 2013). DHA contributes to neuronal membrane function. Real but modest cognitive improvement at typical dietary doses.
EPA/DHA shows modest effect on mood in pooled trials; B12 status correlates with depressive symptoms; selenium supplementation improved wellbeing in autoimmune thyroiditis (Gärtner et al. 2002). Real but small contribution at dietary doses.
Zinc repletion modestly improves acne severity and skin barrier function in deficient individuals; effect is subtle, visible only over weeks, and concentrated in those who were short to begin with (Prasad 2008).
