Psyllium Husk
Psyllium is the boring bottom shelf of the supplement aisle, and one of the few things there with real, FDA-recognised evidence behind it. The reason to bother isn't regularity, which everyone already assumes. Mixed into water, the husk swells into a gel your gut bacteria mostly can't eat, so it travels the whole way through intact: it hauls cholesterol-building bile acids out, and slows how fast a meal's sugar hits your blood. Ten grams a day, before meals, drops LDL about 7% for pennies.

The gel is the whole trick. The husk hydrates into a thick slime that stays intact through your colon 1. That's why one thing fixes opposite problems: the trapped water softens hard stool, and the same gel soaks up excess water in loose stool and firms it.

Cholesterol drops because bile acids leave. The gel grabs bile acids and drags them out, so your liver pulls cholesterol from your blood to make more. About 10 grams a day lowers LDL roughly 7% 2. It's the same lever a statin pulls, and it stacks on top of one for another ~9% 3.

Blood sugar flattens if the gel gets there first. Taken before a meal, it makes carbs reach your gut enzymes slower, so glucose trickles instead of spikes. In type 2 diabetes that's about a full HbA1c point, on par with some oral drugs 4. After the meal it does nothing for sugar.

Buy plain unflavoured husk powder and take it before meals.

Bowel form shifts first, within a few days. Stool arrives on a schedule and takes less effort; if you were straining or running loose, it evens out. That's the most reliable effect and the one you'll actually feel.

Labs move at three to eight weeks. A repeat panel shows LDL down about ten to fifteen milligrams, roughly a low-dose statin's worth for a few pennies a day 3. If you have type 2 diabetes, the next HbA1c can be a full point lower 4.

This isn't the intervention that changes your life. It's the one that quietly compounds a cardiovascular edge while you forget you're taking it.

The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong

Never swallow it dry. It swells on contact with water and can choke you; documented fatal cases exist 1. Skip it with a swallowing disorder, bowel obstruction, or recent gut surgery.

Space it from pills. The gel traps medications too. Take levothyroxine, warfarin, lithium, and diabetes drugs two hours before or four hours after; clear insulin or a sulfonylurea with your doctor first.

"Fiber is fiber" is wrong. What matters is whether it gels and resists your bacteria, not soluble versus insoluble 5. Inulin gels poorly and ferments, so it makes gas.

Psyllium is a low-gas fiber, not a bloating one. Its bacteria-resistance is exactly why it barely ferments 1. And for the same reason it doesn't feed your microbiome; that needs a different fiber.
