It's an old practice with a new name. Yoga nidra has carried this state for fifty years; Stanford's Andrew Huberman relabeled it Non-Sleep Deep Rest in the early 2020s 1. As a voice slows your breath and walks your attention through your body, your nervous system tilts parasympathetic: heart rate slows, brain activity drifts to the edge of sleep without crossing it. Heart-rate variability rises within one session 2.
Stress and sleep are the solid ground. The biggest trial put 341 adults on an 11-minute daily session for 30 days: perceived stress dropped, well-being rose, rated sleep quality improved 3. An eight-week campus programme saw the same fall in stress, depression, and worry 4.
Memory is the borrowed win. Ten minutes of quiet eyes-closed rest after learning lifted week-later recall by about 30 points over filling the gap with a task 5. NSDR inherits this as structured quiet wakefulness, though the evidence is from the rest literature, not NSDR.
The afternoon reset is under-tested. Its popular use is the 3pm slump, the mechanism fits, but nothing has pitted NSDR against a nap or caffeine on alertness. Well-grounded, unproven.
Lie on the floor rather than the bed; the whole point is the alert exit. A mat or carpet, eyes closed, a guided audio playing.
The first session lands within minutes. Around minute four your breathing slows on its own, and you step off the floor a little stunned at how different the room looks 2. After a week the afternoons stop having a wall in them; a month in is where the trial data lands, with stress lower and sleep quality up 3. It won't refund a sleep debt or change your healthspan; it lifts stress, sleep, mood, and afternoon function, and stops there.
A nap and caffeine solve overlapping but different problems. A short nap hits the same slump but leaves you groggy, where NSDR exits clean; a long nap beats caffeine and placebo on memory but costs an hour 6; caffeine is reliable for alertness, useless for memory, and borrows from tonight's sleep. Pick the cost you can afford.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
It does not replace or pay back lost sleep; wakeful rest never does what slow-wave and REM do. It's also not focused meditation, which fights the drift toward sleep that NSDR rides.
It fails when done in bed, right after coffee, unguided, or once with hopes of transformation.
If body-scan attention reliably brings up distress rather than calm, it may be surfacing trauma-related material. Pause and work with a clinician in body-based therapies; the iRest variant was built for PTSD and has modifications for this.

NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest)
10–30 minutes lying down with audio, no preparation, no posture skill. Cognitive demand is to follow a voice. The friction point is the time slot itself, not the practice.
Markil et al. 2012 documents a within-session parasympathetic shift (HF-HRV up, LF/HF down) consistent with autonomic recovery; Kjaer et al. 2002 (n=8 PET) reports ~65% increased endogenous dopamine release in the ventral striatum during yoga nidra. Direct NSDR-vs-nap-vs-caffeine alertness RCTs are missing, so the afternoon-reset claim leans on mechanism plus the adjacent nap literature (Mednick et al. 2003, 2008).
Dewar et al. 2012 showed 10 minutes of quiet wakeful rest after verbal learning boosted 7-day delayed recall by ~30 percentage points over a distractor condition. NSDR sits inside that quiet-wakefulness consolidation window. The dopamine signal from Kjaer et al. 2002 supports an additional post-fatigue attentional-recovery story. Direct NSDR cognition RCTs are absent; mechanism evidence is strong.
Convergent positive RCTs on perceived stress, anxiety, depression, and worry — Moszeik et al. 2022 (n=341 waitlist-controlled, d≈0.4–0.6) and Eastman-Mueller et al. 2013 on an 8-week iRest programme. Mechanism rides parasympathetic activation (Markil et al. 2012). Clinical-tier effect sizes appear in the small-to-moderate range — meaningful, not transformative.
Moszeik et al. 2022 (n=341 RCT, 11-min daily for 30 days) showed significant reductions in perceived stress and improvements in subjective well-being and PSQI; effect sizes in the small-to-moderate range. Eastman-Mueller et al. 2013 corroborates the perceived-stress effect in a university cohort. Real but modest day-to-day wellness lift, not transformative.
Moszeik et al. 2022 RCT showed significant PSQI improvement at 30 days; smaller positive trials on insomnia onset (reviewed in Pandi-Perumal et al. 2022). Polysomnographic confirmation of architectural changes is sparse; effect is primarily on subjective sleep quality and pre-sleep autonomic state. Real but not architectural-tier.
Mostly small RCTs (n<350) with subjective endpoints and unblinded designs. Moszeik et al. 2022 is the largest direct trial. The headline neuroimaging citation (Kjaer et al. 2002) has n=8 and has not been replicated. Mechanism is plausible and adjacent literatures (nap, quiet-rest consolidation) are stronger than the direct NSDR base.
