Bone responds to load, but only while it's growing. The seam down the middle of the upper jaw stays open through the late teens, and in kids, chronic mouth breathing warps growth into a narrow arch and the long "adenoid face" 12. Once that seam fuses, the jaw doesn't budge under tongue pressure any more than a wall moves when you lean on it. Appliances that shift an adult jaw use hundreds to thousands of grams; the hard cases need a surgeon to crack the seam first 3.
Nobody has run the trial. There's no controlled study of passive tongue posture in adults, and the orthodontists' associations say as much 4. The studies waved at you in mewing videos measure something else: supervised tongue and palate exercises, twelve weeks of clinician-led homework, which do cut sleep-apnea severity roughly in half 5. That's real, and it's not the resting posture TikTok sells.
What does land is the breathing. Switch from mouth to nose for fifteen minutes and diastolic blood pressure drops and vagal tone rises 6. Sealed-lip nasal breathing is the genuinely useful half of the whole idea, especially if you've been a lifelong mouth breather.
Do it for the breathing, not the bone. The instruction is one paragraph; the doing is remembering it.
Within a couple of weeks of consistent nose breathing: less snoring, less dry mouth on waking, a touch steadier through the afternoon. Around six weeks the posture goes mostly automatic and you stop having to think about it. The sharper jawline you see in the mirror right after tongue-up is real too, but it's soft tissue lifting into a pose that fades within the hour.
If you actually want the lower face to look different, chewing tougher food builds the masseter that gives the jaw its width, and posture plus a leaner submental area does more in photos than anything happening inside your mouth. None change bone; all beat tongue posture for an adult.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Before-and-afters are pose: chin tucked, camera lower, masseter clenched. Serial X-rays show no jaw repositioning from tongue posture alone in grown adults 3. Mewed for a year and look different? If you're under twenty-two, you finished puberty.
Pressing the tongue tip on your front teeth flares them outward over months. Clenching to hold the posture brings jaw pain and temple headaches. Both are wrong technique, and no clinician checks your form.
Unrefreshed after seven hours, loud snoring, or watched to stop breathing in sleep means a sleep study, not a habit. The Mew family lost two UK dental licences over the bigger claims 7.

- — Like mewing, jaw exercises won't chisel your face; they grow muscle at most.
- — The real, modest win of mewing is the same goal here — keeping the lips sealed and breathing through the nose by default.
- — Both aim at the same outcome — a nose-breathing default — just from different directions, one through training, one through tongue posture.
- — Nasal breathing cuts snoring and dry mouth, but loud snoring with daytime tiredness needs an apnea check, not tongue posture.
- — Mewing only works if you can actually breathe through your nose — a deviated septum or chronic blockage has to be fixed first.
Mewing
Continuous cognitive attention through waking hours for roughly three to six weeks until the posture habituates; community reports near-universal initial dropout. After habituation, near-zero ongoing burden.
Primary win is shifting from oral to nasal breathing, which reduces mouth dryness, snoring, and acute diastolic blood pressure in young adults (Allen et al. 2023). Effect is modest but reliably felt within weeks.
Continuous lip-sealed nasal breathing reduces snoring in mild cases. The adjacent myofunctional-therapy literature shows ~50% AHI reduction in adult OSA (Camacho et al. 2015), but that is active supervised exercise, not passive posture. Passive mewing alone has no trial data.
Tongue elevation tightens the suprahyoid sling and submental skin while cueing chin tuck — the 'sharper jaw' effect is postural / soft-tissue, on the order of camera-angle gain, not skeletal. No published radiographic evidence of bony change in adults (Lee 2019).
Long-term effect from habitual nasal breathing and lip seal is marginal in the typical adult — slightly less mouth-breathing-related soft-tissue laxity over decades. Adult midpalatal sutures are fused; the orthotropic forward-growth mechanism is unavailable past late adolescence (Lee 2019, AAO 2024).
Indirect via better-quality sleep when nasal breathing replaces oral breathing at night, plus higher daytime parasympathetic tone (Allen et al. 2023). Real but not transformative; not a stimulant.
No RCT of the passive protocol exists. Lee 2019 (JOMS) and Rekawek 2021 (JOMS) editorialise the absence of evidence. Adjacent support from Zhao 2021 (mouth-breathing cephalometry in children), Camacho 2015 (OMT for OSA), and Allen 2023 (acute nasal-breathing BP/HRV), none of which test mewing directly.
