The point is the curve, not the kick. Caffeine alone braces you: heart rate up, slightly wired. L-theanine raises the relaxed-alert state, so the two together give you focus without the jitter around it 1. A bowl delivers them at roughly a 2:1 ratio, the band the trials use.
The rest is slow. The catechins, EGCG chief among them, nudge how the gut absorbs cholesterol and how blood vessels relax — a small daily bias that only shows up over months.
Two things are well studied. The smoother focus is solid: a single normal dose improved attention-switching and reaction time an hour later 2, and caffeine-plus-theanine beats caffeine alone across trials 3.
The heart numbers are real but small. Daily catechins drop LDL a couple of mg/dL 4; systolic blood pressure falls roughly 2 mmHg 5. Consistent across populations, too small for your doctor to flag. No trial has run long enough to show fewer heart attacks 6.
One to two grams whisked into 60–80 ml of water at 70–80°C. Boiling water tastes burnt. The powder suspends rather than dissolves, so drink it within a few minutes.
What the switch feels like over time.
- Week one: the 11am second coffee stops calling. There's no peak to fall off, so nothing to recover from.
- Weeks two to four: the smoothness becomes normal, and people stop reading you as wired 1.
- Months one to three: sleep improves — not from the matcha, but because you quit caffeine after 2pm.
- Six to twelve months: on two bowls a day, LDL and systolic move down a hair 5. Too small to see year to year; a compounding input over a decade.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"137 times the antioxidants of green tea." Traces to one study using an unusually weak steeped tea 7. Against decent sencha it's three to five times — a tenth of the marketing figure.
"Ceremonial grade is tested for heavy metals." Grade describes leaf source and flavour; it says nothing about contamination. Look for a published assay rather than the word on the tin.
"A café matcha latte gives the effect." That's a sub-trial dose in milk and syrup; the studied effects come from thin, hot, neat matcha twice a day.

Matcha
Ceremonial-grade matcha at two bowls daily runs $30–80/month; culinary grade $20–50. One-time equipment (whisk, bowl, or a milk frother) under $40. In the $50–500/year band — minor relative to specialty supplements but not free.
A few minutes per bowl for sifting, water-temperature, whisking; one or two bowls a day. Modest lifestyle shift if replacing a one-button espresso machine; trivial if integrated as the morning ritual.
Within weeks of habitual intake, drinkers report the matcha-typical smoother alertness curve — the L-theanine ride-along blunts the caffeine spike (Owen 2008, Haskell 2008) — and a less-jittery, less-crashy day vs coffee at equivalent caffeine. Cochrane 2013 found no hard-endpoint trial signal yet — small additive effect on disease risk, not a transformative one.
L-theanine raises EEG alpha-wave power (the relaxed-but-alert rhythm) and reduces acute stress markers in placebo-controlled trials (Kakuda 2011); the felt effect is a steadier, calmer baseline rather than a treatment for clinical anxiety. Real but small.
