Your brain sits behind a gatekeeper. The blood–brain barrier blocks most molecules, and GABA is one it's built to keep out: small, but electrically charged, the wrong shape to slip across. So the pitch that you can take GABA, brake the brain, and feel calm hits a wall before it starts. Whatever real effect the supplement has probably works the long way around, through your gut and vagus nerve, which never need the barrier crossed 1.
The verdict from people with no stake in it: limited evidence for stress, very limited for sleep 2. Most trials are small and often run by the seller.
Sleep. The one rigorous overnight trial gave 40 insomnia patients 300 mg from a fermented rice extract, and time-to-sleep dropped versus placebo 3. Being a fermented food, its matrix may be doing the work.
Blood pressure is the real signal. Fermented milk with 10 mg of GABA daily dropped systolic pressure about 14 mmHg over twelve weeks in mildly hypertensive adults 4. Only in people whose pressure already ran high, though 5.
Growth hormone. A 3-gram dose spikes GH about 400% for an hour 6. That hour builds nothing alone; the only lean-mass gain on record was an extra pound in men already lifting and eating protein 7.
What you're actually buying. At $20–30 a month for sleep, you're mostly paying for placebo plus a faint peripheral nudge, while the levers that do more sit right next to it: a dark bedroom, a fixed wake time, no late caffeine. If your blood pressure runs high, the stakes are sharper. That 14 mmHg drop came from a food product over twelve weeks, and it's no substitute for a clinic visit and, if needed, medication.
If you're going to try it anyway, keep it small and cheap.
More evidence per dollar: L-theanine and glycine for sleep onset; slow nasal breathing for stress, working within seconds; sodium cuts, weight, and exercise for blood pressure, each far larger than the GABA signal.

Typical retail $10-30/month for synthetic GABA; PharmaGABA-branded products are pricier but still well under $50/year for low-dose use.
A capsule with food or 30-60 minutes pre-bed; no behavioural reorganisation required.
Mild, replicated effects on subjective stress markers (heart-rate variability, salivary chromogranin-A, IgA preservation under acute stress) and a clinically modest systolic BP reduction in mild hypertensives over 12 weeks of fermented-milk delivery (Inoue 2003; Yoto 2012). Effect sizes are small; mechanism likely peripheral (enteric/vagal).
Hepsomali 2020 systematic review concluded 'very limited evidence' for sleep. Byun 2018 polysomnography trial of 300mg fermented rice-germ GABA showed reduced sleep-onset latency in insomniacs. Effect is real but small and unreliable; many positive trials used food-matrix preparations whose active may not be isolated GABA.
Abdou 2006 EEG study (n=13) showed an alpha/beta-wave shift consistent with relaxation 60 min after 100mg GABA; Yoto 2012 replicated direction during an arithmetic stress task with smaller chromogranin-A rise. Both small and industry-linked. Hepsomali 2020 graded the stress evidence as 'limited'.
Hepsomali 2020 systematic review found 'limited evidence for stress and very limited evidence for sleep'. Multiple small RCTs, many industry-linked or single-blind; the BBB-crossing question is unresolved in humans (Boonstra 2015). BP signal is more reproducible but only in baseline-elevated subjects (Inoue 2003, Shimada 2009).
