One trace element, four dials. Boron binds to hormones, vitamins, and minerals and slows the enzymes that would break them down, so the active vitamin D, estrogen, and testosterone your body already made stick around longer 1. That same grip holds onto calcium and magnesium and quiets the enzymes behind inflammation 2.
The case is small trials pointing the same way. Postmenopausal women given three milligrams a day lost far less calcium and magnesium in their urine 34. Osteoarthritis pain improved in most people on six milligrams a day, and C-reactive protein dropped roughly a third within two weeks on a fruit-derived form 56.
The famous testosterone number needs the asterisk. Ten milligrams a day raised free testosterone about 28% and cut inflammation markers within hours 7. But that was eight men for one week, total testosterone barely moved, and nobody has repeated it. The direction is real; the size and durability are not settled.
Take it once with breakfast; the trial-effective range is three to ten milligrams a day.
What you would actually notice. The first week: nothing you can feel, though inflammation markers in your blood would already be drifting down 7. The first month or two: if you started with achy knees or hips, this is the window where about half of people in the joint trials found the morning stiffness easing 58. The first year and beyond: calcium and magnesium leaving the body a little less fast, which shows up on a bone scan as a number that got worse more slowly than your trajectory predicted 3. Nothing here changes how you feel today; the whole return is measured in slow losses that never happened.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Not a testosterone booster: the 28% lift was in free testosterone in eight men over one week, and total testosterone barely moved 7. And not an essential nutrient: regulators set no minimum requirement 9, so this is functional benefit, not a deficiency you would develop.
Skip it if pregnant or trying to conceive; the 10 mg/day ceiling was set against high-dose developmental effects in animals 9. Advanced kidney disease lets boron build up. With hormone-sensitive cancer, ask the oncologist, since free testosterone and estradiol rise 3.
It does little if you already eat enough; raisins, avocados, coffee, and a glass of red wine clear 2 mg on their own 1. Multivitamin doses of 150 mcg to 1 mg sit below every trial, and joint effects take weeks, so quitting after a week proves nothing.

Boron
Bulk sodium tetraborate or boron-citrate capsules at 5–10 mg/day cost $8–25/year; the branded calcium fructoborate form (FruiteX-B) runs $80–150/year. All trivially low.
Single morning capsule with breakfast; plasma half-life of ~21 hours makes any-time-of-day acceptable. No special timing, no taste objection, no cycling required.
Multiple small RCTs (Nielsen 1987 n=12; Travers 1990 n=20; Naghii 2011 n=8; Scorei 2011 n=116) with directionally consistent findings on bone-mineral retention, OA symptoms, sex-steroids, and inflammation. Mechanism is biochemically coherent via cis-diol ester formation. No Cochrane review, no long-duration hard-endpoint trial, several positive studies are industry-funded (calcium fructoborate). Pilot-grade depth, not guideline-grade.
Pilot RCT and calcium-fructoborate trials show clinically meaningful arthritis symptom relief within 2–8 weeks (Travers 1990: 71% improved vs 10% placebo; Reyes-Izquierdo 2012: WOMAC down 29% at 14 days). Inflammatory marker reductions (hs-CRP, TNF-α) appear within days in Naghii 2011. Outside the OA / high-inflammation populations the felt-day-to-day change is subtle.
Bone-mineral retention pathway plausibly reduces fragility-fracture risk in postmenopausal women (Nielsen 1987, Hunt 1997); NHANES III analysis showed ~52% lower prostate cancer odds in the highest dietary boron quartile (Cui 2004, not replicated in the VITAL cohort); sustained inflammation reduction (Naghii 2011, Scorei 2011) is the third additive thread. None of these are by themselves a large hazard-ratio effect; the dimension earns a 2 as additive.
Indirect long-term contribution to facial bone structure preservation via the bone-mineral retention pathway documented in postmenopausal women (Nielsen 1987, Hunt 1997). The cosmetic effect rides on the bone-density and hormonal-modulation case rather than skin or hair-specific evidence; absolute effect is small.
Penland's USDA depletion-repletion studies show EEG slowing and impaired attention, manual dexterity, and short-term memory under boron-deficient diets (~0.25 mg/day) that reverse with repletion to ~3 mg/day (Penland 1994, 1998). The effect is restoration from deficit, not enhancement above ordinary intake — score reflects the trivial-to-small magnitude for typical adults eating fruits, vegetables, nuts.
