The reservoir is real, but who it helps is specific. Doing one thing alone does nothing. Covers alone, sprays alone, vacuuming alone don't push the load under the trigger threshold; the combined routine in the sensitised does 3. The curtain is one piece of it.
The dust also carries chemistry. Indoor dust is the main route by which phthalates and flame retardants from vinyl slats and synthetic fabric enter the body 4. Small for adults; more for a toddler with hands in the mouth 5.
The interval depends on what is hanging, not the calendar.
The effect lands fastest if you react to dust.
- A month in: the morning throat-clear and the reach for the antihistamine fade out.

- With allergic asthma, the bad week that would have come this winter may not 2.
- If you don't react to dust: a cleaner room, no puff when the curtain opens, clearer light through the slats. Modest, and honest.
The curtain isn't the main mite reservoir; the mattress, pillow, and duvet are, and that's where the strongest trial evidence sits 2. If the curtain matters to you, the bedding matters more.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"Dust is mostly dead skin" is wrong; it's mostly textile fibres and tracked-in soil 11. Feather-dusting puffs the reservoir back into the air; only vacuuming, washing, and dry-cleaning take dust out of the room.

Window Blind and Curtain Dust
A cloth, detergent, and your existing washing machine cover it. Heavy lined drapes that need dry-cleaning are the only line that adds up — and it's optional.
A few minutes of dusting most weeks; a take-down-and-wash session every few months. Real recurring work, but each round is short.
Strong on the science that dust on textiles harbours allergens and triggers symptoms in sensitive people. Less direct on whether a quarterly curtain wash alone moves the dial — most trials test it as part of a bigger bedroom cleanup.
If you sneeze when you walk into a dusty bedroom, the curtains are part of why. Cleaning them on a regular cadence reliably softens those symptoms within a few weeks.
Heavy fabric curtains hang a foot from your head and harbour dust mites if you let them. Cleaning on a real cadence reduces night congestion in allergy-prone sleepers.
Small contribution via fewer asthma flares and a lower lifetime body burden of dust-bound chemicals from textiles and PVC. Not a longevity intervention; a real but minor side benefit.
If chronic congestion is fragmenting your sleep without you noticing, lowering the bedroom allergen load lifts the daily energy floor a little. Bigger effect if you're allergy-prone.
Allergy haze and antihistamine fog quietly cost a few percent of your sharpest hours. Cutting the bedroom allergen reservoir is one of the inputs.
