UV cooks the eye slowly. The lens absorbs the UV that gets past the cornea, and the damage cross-links its proteins into the cloudy wedges of a cortical cataract. At the inner corner it drives a pink wedge, a pterygium, across the white toward the iris.
The dose-response is clean. Among lifelong watermen, cortical cataract rose 60% for every doubling of cumulative UV; the most-exposed quarter had 3.3 times the rate of the least 1. The most sun-exposed quarter also carried 6.8 times the pterygium risk 2. Pterygium is more than ten times as common at the equator as above 40ยฐ latitude 3, and UV drives roughly 5% of all cataract blindness worldwide 4. Cataract is the leading cause of blindness on earth.
Buy for three specs; ignore the price tag. A $20 certified pair protects identically to a $300 designer frame from the same factory.
Polycarbonate lenses are the shatter-resistant default and block UV intrinsically. Polarised only cuts glare and says nothing about UV. With a prescription, photochromic lenses or clip-ons do the job.
The payoff is a curve, and most of it is silent.
- Week one: you stop squinting on bright walks, and the tension crinkling your outer eye corners eases off.
- First beach or ski trip: the corneal sunburn you'd have woken up with at 2 a.m. never happens.
- First decade: the pterygium that would have started inching across the white by your mid-forties doesn't.
- Your sixties: peers get cataract-surgery referrals and squint at menus; you read yours.
Prevention pays out in events you never have, and you won't feel any of it. That's the whole deal.
Children, outdoor workers, and anyone living somewhere sunny need this most. A child's clear lens passes more UV to the retina than a yellowed adult one, so start the habit early. Farmers, fishermen, and construction crews rack up ocular UV office workers can't approach; prescription wraparound safety glasses fix comfort, fogging, and breakage at once. If you live near the equator or at altitude, this entry matters far more for you than for most.
The fine print โ when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Below about 86% UV-A blocking a tinted lens raises your dose above bare eyes 5. Polarised only cuts glare, and cloudy days aren't safe: clouds drop UV by just 10โ50%.
Essentially none. Don't drive at night in tinted lenses. A few retinal conditions get individualised tint advice from an ophthalmologist โ follow that over generic rules.

Multiple large cohorts across decades show clean dose-response for cataract and pterygium. No randomized trial (you can't randomize lifetime sun), but as close to settled as observational work gets.
Crow's-feet, lid laxity, the red wedge of a pterygium, and the milky look of a cataract are all partly UV-driven. Block UV for decades and the eyes age slower.
Less eye strain and headache after a day outside. And no painful corneal sunburn from snow, water, or altitude โ that one is brutal and entirely avoidable.
