Time in nature isn't a slope where a little helps a little. It's a cliff. Under sixty minutes of green space a week and you look, in the health data, exactly like someone who never goes at all. Clear two hours a week and your stress hormones fall, blood pressure eases, focus reloads, and mood lifts White et al. 2019. Same threshold whether it's one weekend hike or six lunch walks. The substance is free, nearly everywhere, and most people are dosing just below the line that does anything.

The two-hour line is the cleanest number here. People who cleared 120 minutes were far likelier to report good health and high wellbeing; people at fifteen, thirty, even sixty minutes looked no different from people who did none 1. It held for men and women, young and old, sick and healthy.

The fast effects show up in minutes. Sit in a forest for fifteen and your salivary cortisol drops about 12%, pulse slows, blood pressure dips; a matched city walk moves none of it 2. Blood pressure falls a little in everyone, more in people who start high 3.

A park walk is a real attention drug. Kids with ADHD who took a twenty-minute walk in a park gained focus comparable to a dose of methylphenidate 4. Adults improved on a working-memory test after a nature walk, not after the same walk downtown 5.

Make the closest green space easy to reach, then go often.

  • First walk: about fifteen minutes in, shoulders loosen and the tab you couldn't close loses some of its colour. You're feeling an alarm switch off that you'd stopped noticing 2.

The fine print โ€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

Why people try this and feel nothing. Almost always the dose: three twenty-minute walks feels like a commitment and lands under the line, producing nothing. Track honestly for two weeks. Second, the screen: a podcast and email at every bench keeps the exact load the walk was meant to relieve. Third, the route: a lawn ringed by traffic with one planted tree isn't what the data tracked 6.

No medical contraindication to the substance itself. The risk is the environment: in Lyme and tick-encephalitis zones cover up and do tick checks; move summer walks to morning for heat and UV; severe pollen allergy can flip the mood effect, so shift to off-peak hours.
