Sleep Tracker Accuracy
Your sleep tracker knows roughly when you fell asleep and for how long, and it gets that right. The "deep sleep" and "REM" numbers underneath are guesses with a 20-to-40-minute error bar, wider than most people's night-to-night swings, so the daily breakdown is closer to a horoscope than a measurement. But one number on the newest watches is real and worth its price: an FDA-cleared screen for sleep apnea, which most people who have it never find out they have.
Know Evidence Moderate Chapter Sleep

The band on your wrist has no brain sensor. It reads movement and pulse, and a hidden algorithm guesses what a sleep lab's scalp electrodes would have shown 1. Pulse rhythm does shift across sleep stages, so the signal is real 2, but it's an echo, which is why the stage numbers are soft.

Sleep versus awake, it nails. Top rings and watches clear 95% sensitivity for spotting sleep in healthy adults 3, and total sleep time lands within about 17 minutes of the lab across two dozen studies 4. Trust the hours.

Sleep stages, it fumbles. Across 349,114 scored epochs the best of 11 trackers hit a staging score of 0.69, the worst 0.26, near a coin flip 5. A Fitbit tested in insomnia patients missed deep sleep by 41 minutes a night 6. So a Tuesday-to-Wednesday drop in your deep-sleep line usually means nothing.

The nightly score is unbacked. Readiness, Recovery, Sleep Score: proprietary blends with secret weights, none validated against next-day performance or mood 7. Read it as a trend signal, and stop grading the night by it.

The real damage is behavioral. A bad score lands on a night that felt fine, and the question flips from "how do I feel?" to "what did the device say?" You start spending extra time in bed chasing the number, the exact recipe that manufactures insomnia. It has a name, orthosomnia, first seen in patients who trusted the tracker over their own clinic's recordings 8; it hits 3 to 14% of users, mostly the already sleep-anxious 9.

What a good tracker is actually for.

  • Week one: a mirror. Your real average is shorter than you thought, your bedtime later than you claim.
  • First month: if the feedback nudges one real change, subjective sleep quality ticks up 10. Modest gains, real ones.
  • Months in: on an Apple Watch, 30 nights of breathing can flag moderate-to-severe apnea, cleared on a 1,448-person trial 11.

Roughly 30 million American adults have sleep apnea and most don't know it. For the few who act on the alert, the payoff isn't a nicer score. It's not having a heart attack at 55.

With a history of insomnia, sleep anxiety, or perfectionism, a tracker is likelier to hurt than help, feeding the loop treatment tries to break 9. No consumer tracker diagnoses a sleep disorder 12.
