Saffron
A red kitchen spice that sells near the price of gold, known mostly for turning rice yellow. Here's what you didn't know you didn't know: at 28 to 30 milligrams a day of standardised extract, it matched fluoxetine for mild-to-moderate depression head-to-head, and cut PMS severity for three women in four. The online pitch is wider and mostly junk. The honest use is narrow: low mood short of an SSRI, the sex life an SSRI took, PMS. Fifteen dollars, eight weeks to know.

The mood signal is the headline. Two divided doses a day of standardised extract, six weeks, and the depression score falls by about a third โ€” better than placebo in every trial run, and level with fluoxetine head-to-head 1 2. Month two, if you respond. It's not a transformation; it's something specific given back.

  • Low mood: by week six the morning weight has lifted, the workout you kept skipping is back on, and none of the SSRI trade-offs (weight, flatness, lost libido) showed up 3.
  • PMS: by the second or third cycle the day-25 dip either doesn't come or loses its tooth 5.
  • SSRI sexual side effects: intercourse mostly works again by about week four, arousal restored even if desire lags 7.

The fine print โ€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

The threads in your spice rack are not the supplement; the trials all use extract. It's not a gentle "natural SSRI" either โ€” its reach is broader, and it's proven only for mild-to-moderate depression. The skin, hair, and energy claims have no trial backing.

Bulk saffron runs 30 to 40% adulterated with safflower or beet 9; a $5 "extract" with no standardisation may be mostly dyed plant matter. Buy HPLC-verified affron or Satiereal, and run it the full eight weeks.
