The single best predictor of how fast someone drops off isn't melatonin or how tired they feel. It's how much warmer their feet are than their belly: warm feet, cool core, sleep comes 1. A warm room stops the core from cooling, and deep sleep and REM both fall 2.
The population data is blunt: across 765,000 U.S. adults over a decade, every degree a night ran hotter than local normal added roughly three insufficient-sleep nights per 100 people that month, and the cost was biggest in summer and for older adults 3. On the cooling side, a crossover trial of 72 sleepers found a cool mattress bought about seven and a half extra minutes of deep sleep a night and a calmer, slower heart rate 4.
The thermostat is the whole game, but the bed is half of it.
What you'll notice, and when.
- Within a week: fewer 3am wakings, and mornings where you come up before the alarm feeling closer to ready.
- Within a month: the mid-afternoon slump flattens, and the Sunday lie-in you used to need becomes optional.
- Over years: the slow background cost of chronic under-recovery drifts the right way, quietly.
The fine print β when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Colder isn't always better β past your comfort floor you get shivering arousals instead 2. And it isn't only the air: the microclimate under your bedding holds 33β35Β°C whatever the thermostat reads, so a heavy duvet runs your skin hot in a cool room 8.
If a cool room didn't help, it's usually the bed: a winter duvet and a shared blanket run hotter at the skin than a warmer room with thin cotton, and two bodies under one duvet add roughly 2Β°C, which split duvets fix. Cold feet also block onset, so socks or a hot-water bottle at the foot of the bed help 1.
In a heatwave, don't nap long to recover β it erodes the pressure that drives that night's sleep 9. For infants, overheating is a SIDS risk, so err toward one light layer and no hats indoors 6.

Room Temperature for Sleep
Free for most people β just turn the thermostat down. A fan or AC during summer is the only real cost.

Hot nights independently raise mortality risk. Cooler bedrooms work the other direction, slowly.
