One ounce carries a third of your daily magnesium and a fifth of your zinc โ about 150 mg and 2.2 mg, plus plant protein, unsaturated fat, and iron 1. Magnesium relaxes blood-vessel walls and quiets the brain's calm-down signals; zinc runs immune cells and tissue repair 2, 3.
The mineral trials are the backing; the seed inherits a fraction. Daily magnesium drops blood pressure about three points over two, and six to eight for people who started high or short 4. Repleting it sped sleep onset and eased mild depression in the people who were low 5, 6. Zinc sharpens immune response, most in older adults who were marginal 7.
An ounce delivers 150 mg of magnesium against trial doses of 200 to 400. So expect a smaller version of the trial effect, sized to how short you were. The catch: some minerals get grabbed by phytic acid in the gut, so you absorb a bit under the label.
Over years the seed rides the nuts-and-seeds category. An ounce a day tracks with roughly a fifth lower heart-disease and all-cause death across twenty cohorts 8, 9.
An ounce a day, and the delivery is the whole difficulty.
The arc is slow and mostly invisible.
- Weeks: if you were short on magnesium, you fall asleep faster on more nights, and a high blood pressure starts giving back a few points 4.
- Months: if your HDL was low it nudges up; if you were catching colds that lingered, the next one runs shorter 10, 7.
- Years: you land on the gentle slope of the nuts-and-seeds mortality curves, carrying your fraction of that fifth-lower risk 8.
The fine print โ when to skip it, and what people get wrong
The prostate claim overshoots: whole pumpkin seed beat placebo on nothing in a year-long trial 11. Testosterone rises only if you were zinc-deficient, never past normal 3. Any sleep help is the magnesium over weeks; the tryptophan dose is too small.
Four ways it stalls: salted bags cancel the blood-pressure benefit; stacking the ounce on top of your diet adds half a pound a month; expecting anything the first night; and a bag left to go rancid in a cupboard.
Skip if you have a documented seed allergy โ anaphylaxis is on record. Salt-sensitive hypertension or kidney disease: avoid the salted versions. Prostate symptoms bad enough to bother you need a clinician, not a snack.

Pumpkin Seeds (Pepitas)
Under five dollars a month. One of the cheapest things in the catalogue that does anything.
Leave a bag on the counter. Grab a handful. That's the whole protocol.
Within a few weeks: a few points off your blood pressure if you'd been short on magnesium, slightly better mood on rough days, less of the run-down feeling that comes with a low-mineral diet.
Folded into the seeds-and-nuts pattern that tracks with about 20% lower heart-disease and overall death rates at roughly a handful a day. Pumpkin seeds carry their share of that, not all of it.
If you've been short on magnesium โ and most adults are โ falling asleep gets noticeably faster within a few weeks of eating a handful most days. Real but modest, not a sleeping pill.
A mosaic โ the magnesium, zinc, and broader seeds-and-nuts trials are solid, but the pumpkin-seed-specific trials are small and mixed. Reliable in mechanism, light on direct studies.
A small long-game contribution โ better zinc and iron status feed into skin turnover and the small mineral shortfalls show up over years, not weeks.
A small lift if you'd been chronically short on magnesium. If you weren't, you won't notice much.
A steadier baseline when the magnesium shortfall is real โ less edge on stressed days. Not a replacement for treatment if mood is the actual problem.
