Pet Bedding and Dander
The dog bed, the couch throw, the duvet your cat sleeps on hold more pet allergen by mass than all the air in your house, plus dust mites and fleas' hidden young. About one adult in eight reacts to cats, one in nine to dogs, and for them that pile is the morning congestion and the 4am throat-clear Salo et al. 2014. It grows the longer you leave it, and the fix is a hot weekly wash: pennies, ten minutes, most of it gone.

The animal lies on the bed most of the day, shedding skin flakes coated in saliva: dander, which carries the allergen. The molecules that matter, Fel d 1 from cats and Can f 1 from dogs, are light enough to stay airborne for hours, and the bedding is where they collect 1. The warm, humid textile also breeds dust mites, whose enzyme triggers allergy and drives sensitisation 2. And fleas: the one on the pet is one in twenty, the rest eggs and pupae in the bedding below 3. Washing resets all four clocks.

Detergent handles the dander; heat handles the mites. In bedding dust, a plain cool wash pulled most of the cat allergen out, but 60Β°C water was needed to kill the mites and break their allergen down 4. The wash is one piece of a bundle with sealed covers, vacuuming, and filtration, not a cure alone, because the pet keeps refilling the reservoir 2. Even bathing the cat drops airborne allergen for only a week before it rebounds 5. You lower the load, then repeat.

The bar is weekly, hot, with detergent.

A foam insert that can't be machine-washed: wash the cover, air the foam in direct sun, dry it fully before recovering.

The pet in the room is fine; the pet on the bed is the sleep lever. A dog in the bedroom but off the bed left sleep efficiency around 81%; on the bed it dropped measurably, and breed and size barely mattered 6. If it sleeps on the mattress and you wake tired, move it to a floor cushion: you keep the bond, lose the 3am arousals, and the sheets stop collecting dander.

The first two or three washes do most of the work. Inside a month the morning throat-clear quiets, the bedside tissues go untouched, and reliever-inhaler use, if the pet was driving it, falls back to baseline. Move the pet off the bed too, and the sleep change is what people notice most. None of it is dramatic, which is exactly why the un-washed bed goes unnoticed.

The fine print β€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

Hypoallergenic breeds don't solve this: Poodles and Sphynx cats shed less hair but make the same Fel d 1 and Can f 1 1. And hot water alone isn't enough, because pet allergen is heat-stable; detergent and a rinse do the dander work 4.

Common slips: washing only the cover while the loaded insert reloads it within days; sharing a hamper and cross-contaminating your shirts; air-drying outside on humid days, which re-inoculates with mould and pollen 2.

If a pet has an active skin infection or anyone in the home is immunocompromised, resistant staph can pass between them: wash more often, keep the pet off the human bed, follow the vet 7. With infants, don't sterilise: a normal pet-rich home lowers later asthma risk 8.
