Nasal Cycle
Right now one nostril does most of your breathing; in a few hours the other takes over. About three in four adults run this swap on autopilot, a brainstem switch rotating which side works and which rests Hasegawa 1977. Here's what you didn't know you didn't know: the blocked nostril you wake up with is usually this cycle plus the side you slept on, not a sinus problem to medicate. And you can ride it on purpose, in five minutes, to drop blood pressure.

Each nostril is lined with the same spongy, blood-filled tissue that swells elsewhere in the body under nerve control. Your brain tells one side to shrink its vessels (that nostril opens) and the other to swell (that one narrows), then flips a couple of hours later. Total airflow across both stays about even, so you don't notice. It's the autonomic nervous system doing it โ€” the same automatic wiring that sets your heart rate.

The point of half-blocking one side at a time is duty rotation. The open, working side warms, filters, and humidifies the air; the resting side gets bathed in a thin film of immune-rich plasma before its turn comes again 1. During a cold the cycle exaggerates, which is why one nostril usually clogs worse than the other 2. A day-long recording clocks the swap at roughly two hours awake, stretching past four during sleep 3.

Alternate-nostril breathing (nadi shodhana). The magic isn't the alternation โ€” it's that closing one side forces slow, even breaths, and slow breathing turns up the "rest" channel. Across six trials it dropped systolic pressure about 7 mmHg 4, on par with losing a few pounds.

You don't need to know which nostril is active to begin; a few rounds even it out. To check anyway, breathe onto the back of a cold hand and feel which side hits harder.

The blocked-nostril-at-night problem. Wake up with one side plugged? Side-sleeping adds a reflex on top of the cycle: pressure on your shoulder or hip swells the down-facing nostril and opens the upper one. Roll over and the block follows you across 5. So sleep with the stuffy side up, or use a wedge pillow if it's chronic โ€” a decongestant is treating a posture. Only a nostril blocked for days regardless of position is worth an ENT visit.

If you're only after the blood-pressure and calming effect, the nostril choreography is optional. Box breathing, 4-7-8, or plain six-breaths-a-minute paced breathing hit the same vagus-nerve pathway. Pick the one you'll actually do daily.

The fine print โ€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

The claim that the open nostril switches on the opposite brain hemisphere doesn't hold up: a cognitive replication found nothing 6, and an imaging review rejected the link 7. Folklore for how it feels.

The slow version above is safe for almost anyone. If you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, a heart condition, or you're pregnant, avoid the breath-holds entirely. Lightheadedness means stop.
