It runs four enzymes, and that's the whole job. Your body uses molybdenum to build one scaffold, the molybdenum cofactor, then slots it into four enzymes 1. Those enzymes clear sulfite from wine and dried fruit, make uric acid, and help the liver process certain drugs. All four matter. None of them are held back by how much molybdenum you eat โ they saturate well below what people already get, and the kidneys flush the rest 2.
Taking it does nothing measurable. Give nearly thirty thousand adults vitamin C plus molybdenum for over five years and the molybdenum arm comes back null on mortality and cancer 3. No controlled trial in a fed adult has shown a benefit on energy, immunity, or anything else 4. The one thing the record does hold: a Crohn's patient who spent eighteen months on an IV bag missing molybdenum developed a racing heart, night blindness, then coma. Adding it back reversed everything 5. Four decades later, that's still the only such case.
Lunch already handles it. The requirement is 45 micrograms a day in the US; the average American gets 76 to 109 6. Beans are the dense source. Half a cup of black-eyed peas is roughly three days' worth; a cup of lentils, chickpeas, or kidney beans clears the day on its own; oats and whole-wheat bread add more 7. Vegetarians and vegans, who plan around B12 and iron, sit at the top of the molybdenum range without trying.

The fine print โ when to skip it, and what people get wrong
The real risk is copper. High-dose molybdenum blocks copper in the gut โ the chemistry a Wilson-disease drug uses on purpose 10. Stacking it on zinc supplements or a leaky gut can tip you into copper deficiency months later. Upper limit: 2,000 micrograms a day 7.
Detox: the enzymes already run at the speed your body needs; extra molybdenum doesn't crank them up 4. Gout: backwards โ the molybdenum enzyme makes uric acid, which is why the standard drug blocks it 7.
