Konjac and Glucomannan (Shirataki Noodles)
A plate of noodles for almost no calories sounds like a diet gimmick. The fiber inside them isn't. Glucomannan, refined from the konjac tuber, swells into the most viscous gel in the fiber catalogue, and at three to four grams a day it pulls LDL cholesterol down about ten percent Ho 2017, flattens the post-lunch sugar spike, and dulls afternoon hunger. It's one of the few things at the dinner table that moves a blood-test number, for a few cents a day.

It works by drinking water. Dry powder meets the fluid you drank and swells into a gel several times its volume 1. That gel empties slowly, so you feel full longer; it slows sugar and fat crossing into your blood; and it traps bile acids, so your liver pulls LDL from your blood to make new ones. That last step is the trick oats and psyllium use too 2.

The cholesterol drop is the settled part. Twelve pooled trials put the LDL fall near ten percent at three to four grams a day 3. European regulators authorized the cholesterol claim at four grams a day and a blood-sugar claim at four grams per meal 4. Bowel regularity holds up in adults too 5.

Weight loss is real but small, and only inside a deficit. Early trials looked great; a stricter 2014 review found no standalone effect 6. Glucomannan makes an existing calorie deficit easier to hold. It doesn't create one. Swap noodles for pasta and then order dessert, and you lose nothing.

Trial doses cluster at three to four grams a day, split across meals, always chased with a full glass of water.

Hunger and sugar effects show up at the first meal. The cholesterol effect needs three to eight weeks of daily use to register on a blood panel 3. No loading dose, no titration.

Within a week: the 3pm hunger arrives later and smaller, the carb-lunch food coma is shallower, bowels run on schedule. Interior changes only you can feel.

Within two months: a borderline LDL panel comes back about ten percent lower 3 โ€” enough, for some people, to move a statin conversation to "recheck in six months."

At a year: a slightly better cardiometabolic profile that compounds with whatever else you do. Small and real. Nearly free, almost no effort, interferes with nothing.

The fine print โ€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

A dry capsule can lodge in the esophagus and swell into a plug needing endoscopy 7. Take capsules only with a full glass, never lying down. Trouble swallowing? Use powder or food form only.

"Zero-calorie noodles burn fat": no, they replace calories you'd eat. "More is better": above five grams a day benefits plateau and bloating climbs 4. "Konjac is deadly": the banned fruit-jelly mini-cups were 8; noodles aren't.

If three grams a day for two months hasn't moved your cholesterol, the fix isn't six grams; look at the rest of the diet. Ten percent off LDL isn't statin-grade: an add-on for borderline numbers, not a substitute in disease.
