The magnesium is the real win. Three tablespoons deliver about 210 mg, roughly half an adult's daily need, and about half of US adults eat less than the recommended amount 1. That's the single most concrete thing in the bag.
The protein is complete but small. All nine essential amino acids are there, and hulled seeds digest at about 90% versus 84% for whole ones 2. But 9 grams a serving makes hemp a contributor to a day's protein, not a base.
The omega-3 is the plant kind. Daily hemp does raise the omega-3 share in your red blood cells over a month or two 3. But it's ALA, which converts to the EPA and DHA in fish oil at only about 5% and 1% respectively 4. Hemp raises the floor; it doesn't replace fish.
Buy the seeds hulled and eat them raw.
Almost none of the win is something you'll feel, so here's the honest arc.
- Week one. Nothing. You eat the seeds. They taste mild and grassy.
- Month one. If you were low on magnesium โ statistically you probably were โ the day-to-day floor of how you feel is a bit steadier.
- Two months. The omega-3 share in your red blood cells has risen 3. Your lipid panel hasn't moved, and it won't.
- A year. Ten-odd kilograms of complete plant protein and a lot of magnesium that wasn't on your plate before, feeding the same slow benefit nuts and seeds earn in the long run.
A quiet upgrade to a few background variables, for a spoonful of habit. That's the whole offer, and it tends to deliver it.
The fine print โ when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"It lowers cholesterol." Two clean trials, both null on the lipid panel 5 3. If LDL is why you bought the bag, it won't pay off.
"The blood-pressure trial proves it works." That study used 50 g of isolated hemp protein powder, about five times the protein in a food serving 6. Three tablespoons carry a small fraction of that, maybe none.
Skip if your job tests for THC. Hulled seeds sit under regulatory limits and rarely trip a screen, but isolated positives exist at high daily intake; if your job is on the line, don't risk it. On warfarin or another blood thinner, or with a seed allergy, clear it with your clinician first.

Hemp Seeds
Around a dollar a day; cheap as a daily food.
Open the bag, spoon it on. A few seconds.
Better fat balance in cell membranes after four to eight weeks โ a small, slow contribution to skin and aging, not a transformation.
Half a day's magnesium in three tablespoons, complete plant protein, and a better fat balance โ solid food upgrade, not a felt jolt.
The same long, quiet credit nuts and seeds earn in heart-disease cohorts โ small, real, accumulated over decades.
Composition is well characterised. Outcome trials at food doses are sparse and mostly used the oil, not the seed.
A single 20-week trial on hempseed oil eased dryness and itching in atopic skin โ the whole-seed signal for the general reader is thinner.
Closes the magnesium gap most adults silently carry; for replete eaters, no extra lift.
