Two things are happening. First, wet skin transfers its cargo to whatever it touches next. A hand left with a film of water passes about 68,000 bacteria per touch; the same hand dried below a moisture threshold passes about 140 1. That thousandfold gap sits between two states that feel identical walking out the door. Second, a high-velocity airstream past a wet hand turns that film into an aerosol. A jet dryer put roughly 1,300 times more airborne bacteria at head height than a paper towel and 27 times more than a warm-air dryer 2; a marker organism travelled 3 metres from a running jet dryer 3, and the same pattern held for a virus stand-in 4.
It shows up outside the lab too. Swap jet dryers for paper-towel dispensers across hospital washrooms and the jet-dryer days leave more bacteria on the floors and fixtures, including resistant organisms 5. Sampling hands after washing, paper-towel drying left the least behind; jet-air left about as much as not drying at all 6. The two studies finding jet and paper equivalent were industry-funded and never measured the air or the surrounding surfaces 7. Rubbing on paper also scrubs off loosely-stuck bacteria, so drying is partly a second wash 8.
Whatever the restroom gives you, get to actually-dry.
Dry until your hands feel dry, not just less wet. The drying is the slow step, and people leave too early.
The gain is real and small. Per visit you won't feel a thing. Across a winter of shared offices, schools, and transit, it's roughly the difference between catching the round of gastro going around and not. It matters more if you've got small kids who rinse badly, or you're often around someone immunocompromised, where the margin between background exposure and a real illness is thinner.
The fine print โ when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"Touchless means cleaner." The route is water aerosolised off unrinsed hands, not touch; a paper towel is single-use anyway. "Hospitals use dryers." Clinical guidance specifies paper for staff 9; the dryers are in visitor washrooms. "Paper's worse for the planet." The lifecycle math is contested and separate from the hygiene one.
Walking away wet is the common miss: the film survives, the exit handle gets it. Warm-air dryers can raise counts when their filters seed the next airstream 10. The door handle undoes the rest; use the towel as a barrier and bin it after.
