Hair Conditioner
The front of the bottle sells repair, growth, and transformation. Conditioner does none of that. Its one real job is to lubricate wet hair so it doesn't fracture when you comb it, and wet hair is the fiber at its most fragile, about a third of its dry strength. That small mechanical thing, done after every wash, is why your ends stop breaking and length finally accumulates. It's fast, cheap, and the cheap bottle works as well as the salon one.

It's electrostatics, not nutrition. Your hair carries a slight negative charge, and damage from bleach, dye, sun, and heat raises it sharply. The active ingredient is a positively charged surfactant, a quat, that binds to the negative sites and deposits film where the fiber is most damaged. That's why it lands on the ends and skips the roots without you steering it 1. Bleached hair carries roughly five times the surface charge of virgin hair, so it grips more film 2.

The bench evidence is solid. Conditioner cuts the force needed to comb wet hair by 30 to 80 percent, with the biggest drop on bleached fibers 34. Less pulling force means fewer broken cuticle scales and fewer split ends. Nobody has tested whether ten years of use grows measurably longer hair; the cause-and-effect chain holds, but the multi-year study doesn't exist 5.

Pay for the formulation match, skip the brand. Fine or oily hair wants the lightest rinse-out, ends only. Curly and coily hair wants the heaviest, because scalp oil can't reach the ends of a curved shaft 6. If you bleach, dye, or heat-style, you've exposed more binding sites, so a rich formula does more and skipping it shows faster 2. A $5 drugstore bottle and a $60 salon bottle test the same on the ratings that matter; typical spend runs $30 to $60 a year 1.

The detangling pass is the whole point. Wet hair, conditioner still on, wide-tooth comb, ends first. That one move is most of the long-term benefit; a dry fine-tooth comb an hour later is where the breakage comes back 6.

Fast then slow. First wash: a comb that doesn't yank, hair that dries softer. Within a month, fewer broken strands on the pillow. Then the quiet part: over months to years the breakage rate at the ends drops below the growth rate, so hair stops stalling at one length and starts to accumulate 36. None of it is transformative. It's slow and cumulative, two minutes a wash and under sixty dollars a year.

The fine print β€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

Two claims the chemistry kills. Silicones don't damage hair; on fine hair they build up and flatten it, fixed by a monthly clarifying wash 1. And nothing repairs a split end but scissors; film-formers glue the halves until the next wash 3.

When it "doesn't work for you," it's usually application. Conditioning the scalp on fine hair, under-rinsing, or weekly deep-masking hair that isn't damaged all read as "my hair is broken." Each one reverses inside a wash or two 5.

The one real harm is an allergic rash. Methylisothiazolinone, methylchloroisothiazolinone, and fragrances top the hair-care allergen list; an itchy, scaly rash on the scalp, hairline, or neck days after a new product is the tell. Stop it and avoid that ingredient next time 78.
