The three types. Pigmentary is extra melanin in the skin, the same pigment that tans your face; it looks brown, runs in families, and worsens with sun 1. Vascular is muscle and vessels showing through skin about a quarter as thick as your forehead; the hue is blue or purple and gets worse with allergies, poor sleep, and alcohol 2. Structural isn't dark at all: bone and fat have shifted, leaving a groove that sits in shadow, and the shadow reads as a circle 3. Nearly 9 in 10 people are a mix of two or three 1.
What matched treatment gets you. Creams for the pigment type (vitamin C, hydroquinone, retinoids) drop measured darkness 12 to 22 percent over 8 to 12 weeks 4 5. Filler for the structural type lifts the hollow the same day, satisfies about 9 in 10 people, and lasts 12 to 18 months 6 7. Combinations beat single treatments when the case is mixed, which most are 8.
Strangers read it fast. Sleep-deprived faces get rated less healthy and more tired by people who never met you, and dark circles are one of the top cues driving it 9 10. The signal doesn't care whether you're actually tired; someone with constitutional pigment who slept nine hours still gets the "are you okay?" question. Fixing the circles wins some of that back, honestly, not magically.
The timeline, once you match the treatment. Concealer works the same day, and many people stop there. Vascular work shows in a week: vessels constrict, the "you look rested" comments start. Filler for a structural case is done in two weeks โ the shadow is simply gone. Pigment is the slow one: the brown stripe fades noticeably by month three, more with a laser series over six 12. What you're buying is one dialed-down signal, the tired-stranger read, not a younger face.
The fine print โ when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"Just sleep more" helps the vascular type but won't move genetic pigment or an aged groove. "One eye cream fixed it" only works if your circles were the type creams reach; they touch none of the structural component 1. Cucumbers and cold spoons shrink puffiness for a few hours, not a strategy.

- โ Pigment-type circles come from sun exposure โ daily sunscreen is the cheap baseline that keeps them from deepening.
- โ The vascular kind of circle gets worse when you're short on sleep โ sometimes that's the whole fix.
- โ If the shadow is a hollow, not pigment, very low body fat may be the cause โ a little facial fat can soften the tear trough.
- โ Under-eye darkness has three causes; the eye-area routine only fades the pigment kind.
- โ Low iron is a classic, missable cause of under-eye darkness. If creams and sleep haven't worked, a ferritin check is worth doing before more serums.
