Six breaths a minute is a resonance, not a round number. Your heart already speeds up on the inhale and slows on the exhale, and your baroreflex, the loop that steadies blood pressure, cycles about every ten seconds. Breathe at that same rate and the two waves line up and amplify, like pushing a swing at the right moment 1. The reflex sharpens, the vagus nerve fires harder on each exhale, and the heart swings wider.
The blood pressure numbers are the strong part. Across thirteen trials of hypertensive people breathing slow ten to fifteen minutes a day, readings fell about seven points off the top and four off the bottom 2. In one clean case, fifteen minutes at six a minute took the top number from about 150 to 141, and doubled the controlling reflex 3. Equal inhale and exhale at five and a half a minute gives the biggest heart-rate swing of any rate 4.
The calming benefit is real, but it isn't about the rate. Pooled breathwork trials show a small drop in stress and anxiety 5. But the best test of coherent breathing, 400 people over four weeks, improved no more than a control group breathing at ordinary speed 6. Slow breathing calms you, but so does any breath-focus. The resonance is what does the cardiovascular part.
Sit upright, phone face down, timer set. The one thing beginners get wrong is going deep instead of slow: big breaths leave you lightheaded and wired, the opposite of the goal.
The arc, session to years.
- First sit: shoulders loosen; on an HRV watch, the swing visibly widens over the ten minutes.
- First weeks: the calm lingers past the session, and the afternoon slump bites less.
- Two to four weeks: from a start above 130 over 85, a home cuff drifts down a few points, and sleep improves too 8.
- Years: your blood pressure trend curves less steeply, and the medication talk waiting in your fifties comes later or not at all.
The fine print โ when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Slow beats big. The "deep breath in" that fills your chest washes out carbon dioxide, which is mild hyperventilation; stretch an ordinary breath long instead. It is also not a proven anxiety treatment: the pressure effect is solid, the psychological claim is shakier 6.
Why it "did nothing." You did it three times, but the cuff only responds to near-daily practice over weeks 7. Or you breathed too deeply and mistook the tingle for release. Or you made it a performance; rigid counting is a stress pattern that cancels the shift.

Coherent Breathing
Five to twenty minutes of sitting still and counting, every day. Not hard, but the gains depend on actually doing it.
A clinically meaningful 7/4 mmHg drop in blood pressure after a few weeks of daily practice โ the same ballpark as a low-dose blood pressure pill, with no side effects.
Reliable calming on demand โ a five-minute reset that pulls you out of a stress spike. The deeper week-to-week mood effect is real but may not be specific to this exact technique.
The cardiovascular mechanism is settled and the blood pressure drops are replicated across many trials. The mental health benefits are real but partly shared with any breath-focus practice.
Lower resting blood pressure, year after year, is one of the most reliable predictors of a longer healthy lifespan. The size of the drop here is in the range that matters.
Better parasympathetic recovery during the day means less of the wired-tired feeling at 4pm. Modest, but real.
A slight steadying of attention and emotional regulation, useful before meetings or hard work. Not a productivity hack.
Daily practice for a month modestly improves how rested you feel on waking โ the parasympathetic shift sets a better pre-sleep autonomic state.
