Cinnamon (Ceylon vs Cassia)
The cinnamon in most kitchens is not the tree the spice is named for. Almost everything sold as ground cinnamon in a North American supermarket is cassia, whose flavour compound coumarin damages the liver at chronic high doses EFSA 2008. A heaping teaspoon a day already crosses the safe ceiling for an average adult. Ceylon, the true cinnamon, has about a hundredth the coumarin and hides in specialty stores. The whole thing turns on which jar you own, and one cheap swap fixes it.

"Cinnamon" is two different plants. Cassia is the bark of trees grown in China, Indonesia, and Vietnam; Ceylon (Cinnamomum verum) grows almost only in Sri Lanka 1. Cassia is hot and bold, Ceylon delicate and citrusy, and cassia carries coumarin at two to ten milligrams per gram against Ceylon's trace amount 2.

The blood-sugar claim is real but small. Cinnamon blunts the post-meal sugar spike and, in people with type-2 diabetes, gently lowers baseline glucose over weeks 3. Pooled across many trials, the long-term marker HbA1c drops about 0.27 points, roughly a fifth of what metformin does 4. It is a margin, not a treatment.

The whole protocol is one jar. If you use cinnamon at all often, this is a five-dollar decision you make once.

What the swap buys you. For most people, nothing you can feel: cinnamon just stops being something the supplement aisle sells at you, and the jar becomes one the household can use heavily without keeping milligram tallies. For anyone pre-diabetic or early type-2 watching the numbers, daily Ceylon nudges fasting glucose the same order of magnitude as losing five to seven pounds 5. It is not the plan. It is one small thing that compounds alongside the plan.

The fine print โ€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

Cinnamon is not a blood-sugar cure. One early trial showed a big drop 6; every meta-analysis since has shrunk it 5. For a healthy adult, the felt change is none.

The cassia ceiling. The safe coumarin limit is about seven milligrams a day for a 70 kg adult; a heaping teaspoon of cassia delivers ten to twenty-five 7. Case reports link cinnamon supplements to acute hepatitis that resolves on stopping 8. On metformin, a blood thinner, or insulin, tell your doctor before daily multi-gram use.
