Five errors stack, and they all lean the same way: you ate more than the app says.
Labels are allowed to miss. Manufacturers get a 20 percent margin on stated values, and packaged foods trend high 12.
Restaurants understate. Chain sit-down dishes ran on average 18 percent above their printed menu counts 3.
Whole nuts give back less. Almonds landed at 129 calories per 28 grams against a label-calculated 173, about a quarter under 4. Cooking shifts it too: cooked egg protein is 91 percent absorbed, raw only 51 percent 5.
Memory is the worst input. Measured against isotope-traced intake, people underreport by 20 to 40 percent 6. Obese subjects sure their metabolism was broken were underreporting by 47 percent 7. The bigger the meal, the bigger the miss 8.
The gap is real, and tracking still works. Stack the five and a logged 1800 is often 2100 to 2400 eaten; the errors line up rather than cancel. Yet self-monitoring trials show tracking beats not tracking by 1 to 3 kilograms of weight loss 9. The payoff is food awareness, not a precise number. That distinction is the whole game.
Treat the count as a rough gauge you calibrate to yourself.
Week one feels like a demotion. The daily total stops being the verdict; your weekly average body weight becomes it. By the first month the stalled-diet panic stops firing, because a flat week now means "recalibrate," not "my metabolism is broken." By the first year you still have the habit, while most people quit within months from the friction of pretending the count is bookkeeping. The accuracy story doesn't make you lean. It makes the tool survivable, which is what most weight-loss attempts run out of.
The fine print โ when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"1500 calories and not losing, so my metabolism is broken." Almost never; the count is broken, not the body 7. Tracking harder can't fix a floor set by label tolerances and cooking. Menu counts stay biased low too 3.
Two ways it goes wrong. The plateau quit: the undercount catches up, weight stalls, diet dropped, when recalibration would have fixed it. The satiety trap: ultra-processed meals drove people to eat 500 more per day than calorie-matched whole food 10.
Any history of anorexia, bulimia, or binge-eating disorder: calorie tracking is contraindicated, and it's linked to onset and relapse 11. Use the plate method or hand portions instead. Same caution for adolescents.
