Bedroom EMF Exposure
The bedroom's quiet radio chorus of phone, router, and smart speaker is supposed to be crushing your sleep and draining your melatonin. Three decades of blinded sleep trials and regulator reviews say it isn't, at the field strengths a real nightstand delivers. The phone is still costing you sleep. Move it out of the room anyway, because the screen and the notifications are doing the damage the antenna gets blamed for.
Know Evidence Moderate Chapter Sleep

The radiation case is empty. Sleep labs have run the same test for thirty years: put someone in bed, run a real or fake phone signal through the night, score the sleep. People can't tell active nights from sham nights, and the sleep stages don't move 1. A European Commission review of the whole pile reached the same verdict 2.

The dose isn't there. Radio photons carry about a million times too little energy to break a chemical bond, so they can't damage DNA the way an X-ray can. The one confirmed effect is heating, and a router across the room warms nothing you could measure 3. IARC's "possibly carcinogenic" tag came from heavy users pressing a phone to their head for years โ€” the same weak tier as pickled vegetables, and not from nightstand distance 4.

What crushes melatonin is the screen, not the antenna. Four hours of evening reading on a lit screen instead of paper cuts melatonin by about half and pushes your body clock back roughly an hour and a half 5. The radio sitting next to your head is a bystander.

The fix is displacement over shielding. The antenna worry is empty; the phone still has to leave.

If you feel EMF-sensitive: the headaches and sleepless nights are real, but in blinded tests people can't pick the active field from sham, and symptoms appear just as often when it's off 7. It's a nocebo โ€” real symptoms, wrong cause. Relief runs through the expectation, not more shielding.

The fine print โ€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

5G is different: mid-band 5G overlaps bands we've lived with for decades; millimetre-wave stops in the outer skin, and the 2020 guidelines already cover it 6. Airplane mode helps: only if you also darken the screen โ€” killing the antenna while scrolling is backwards 5.
