Air Purifiers
You breathe indoor air more than any other kind, and indoors is usually the dirtier side of your front door. The confusing part is the shelf: half of it works, half is a trap. A plain HEPA unit in the bedroom cuts the fine particles that drive heart disease and the allergens that wreck sleep. Ionizers and ozone "sanitizers" make the air worse. Buy the right kind, run it while you sleep, and the effect shows up in your blood in two days.

HEPA is a dense wall of fibre. The fan pushes room air through it four to five times an hour, and anything bigger than about half a micron gets caught: pollen, dander, mould spores, wildfire soot. By the standard it catches 99.97% at the hardest size, 0.3 micrometres.

The body reacts fast. Two nights of a true HEPA unit dropped bedroom fine particles by more than half and pulled systolic blood pressure down 2.7 mmHg, with inflammation and clotting markers quieting alongside 1. The same cardiovascular response repeats in older adults 2 and in a town under chronic woodsmoke 3.

Allergy and asthma move slower, same direction. Six weeks of bedroom HEPA cut allergic-rhinitis scores in adults 4, and a year of it cut unscheduled asthma visits by roughly a fifth in kids around smokers 5. The long-arc payoff on heart attacks and mortality is extrapolated from outdoor-pollution data, never trialled directly 6.

Some people feel it in weeks; most don't feel it at all. Allergy sufferers, asthmatics, houses with a smoker, and anyone under wildfire smoke get the fast win: fewer stuffy mornings, less reaching for the inhaler. For a healthy adult in a clean-air home the gain is real but silent, the slow compounding kind of a daily walk rather than anything you feel on a Tuesday.

The only spec that matters is on the box: CADR, smoke rating first. Smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds the room's floor area in square feet, so a 200-square-foot bedroom wants about 135 or higher 7. Budget runs $120–$300 up front and $50–$150 a year after.

The arc, if you have allergies. Two days: the bedroom feels less closed-up and, if measured, blood pressure has already shifted 1. Two weeks: fewer swollen, sneezing mornings 4. Months: kids with asthma have fewer flare-ups and lost school days 10. Years: a slow drift down in total particle exposure. For non-allergic adults, nothing changes that you feel; the benefit is statistical.

The fine print β€” when to skip it, and what people get wrong

Ignore these box claims: UV lamps see each particle for milliseconds and add little; houseplants can't out-clean a fan and filter 13; "sterilises the air" oversells the physics.

Four ways to waste it: unit too small, run only on the quiet setting, door left open, filter never changed. Any one turns four air changes an hour into one.
