Tropical Fruit
Eat a mango most mornings and within about six weeks people start saying you look rested, without being able to say why. It isn't a tan and it isn't weight: it's the orange-yellow carotenoids the skin stores from a steady fruit load, the warmth humans read as healthy in a face Whitehead 2012. Tropical fruit also carries the supermarket's densest vitamin C and wraps its sugar in cell walls that blunt the spike juice can't. The cost is slicing some fruit.

Four things do the work, and they don't overlap. Vitamin C runs at densities no temperate fruit matches, guava near 228 mg per 100 g 1. Carotenoids are the orange-red pigments stored in skin fat, where the visible warmth comes from 2. Fibre slows how fast the sugar reaches the blood 3. Papain and bromelain are real enzymes, but stomach acid breaks them down; one slice gives milligrams 4.

The papaya finding is the surprise. Its carotenoids absorb at about three times the rate of carrot's and tomato's: in papaya the pigment sits dissolved in oil droplets, in carrot it's locked in solid crystals the gut struggles to crack 5. A slice beats an equal serving of carrot for usable pigment.

The juice split is the actionable one. Same fruit, same sugar, opposite metabolic sign: whole fruit tracks with lower type-2 diabetes risk, the same sugar as juice with higher 6 7. Across two million people, five servings of fruit and vegetables a day tracks with about 15% lower all-cause mortality 8.

Two to three fist-sized servings of whole fruit a day, rotated across the four: a cheek of mango, half a small papaya, a couple of pineapple rings, or two guavas.

Timing doesn't matter. If you change one thing, swap the juice you drink for whole fruit; that alone flips the sign of the diabetes signal.

The arc runs on three clocks. Within hours, plasma vitamin C rises and you feel nothing, unless you were chronically low, in which case the tired floor lifts over a couple of weeks. By four to eight weeks the gut settles. Around week six the skin lands: someone you don't see daily asks if you've been on holiday. The carotenoid layer has warmed the face other people read before they can name it 9. Over decades, two servings most days puts you on the part of the mortality curve that bends down 8.

The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong

"Fruit sugar is sugar": wrapped in cell walls it tracks opposite to juice on diabetes risk 6. "Papaya digests your meal": clinical bromelain needs 200–500 mg; a slice gives milligrams 4.

The juice slide: fresh mango becomes nectar, fibre gone, spike back 7. Eating it clean: no fat on the plate cuts carotenoid uptake to about a third 5.

Ask a clinician first with a latex allergy (a third to half cross-react to mango, papaya, banana, kiwi, avocado 10), warfarin plus daily pineapple, or advanced kidney disease, since guava runs about 417 mg potassium per 100 g 1.
