The two-hour line is the cleanest number here. People who cleared 120 minutes were far likelier to report good health and high wellbeing; people at fifteen, thirty, even sixty minutes looked no different from people who did none 1. It held for men and women, young and old, sick and healthy.
The fast effects show up in minutes. Sit in a forest for fifteen and your salivary cortisol drops about 12%, pulse slows, blood pressure dips; a matched city walk moves none of it 2. Blood pressure falls a little in everyone, more in people who start high 3.
A park walk is a real attention drug. Kids with ADHD who took a twenty-minute walk in a park gained focus comparable to a dose of methylphenidate 4. Adults improved on a working-memory test after a nature walk, not after the same walk downtown 5.
Make the closest green space easy to reach, then go often.
The arc, if you actually clear the threshold.
- First walk: about fifteen minutes in, shoulders loosen and the tab you couldn't close loses some of its colour. You're feeling an alarm switch off that you'd stopped noticing 2.
- First month: the reset starts sticking between visits. A long walk on the right route quiets the brain region that loops on what's wrong, the one antidepressants act on 8.
- First season: people ask what you changed, usually "you seem less wound up." High readings drift down a few millimetres 3.
- Years: the part you never feel. People who clear the line get type-2 diabetes less, have fewer cardiovascular events, and die sooner less often 9.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Why people try this and feel nothing. Almost always the dose: three twenty-minute walks feels like a commitment and lands under the line, producing nothing. Track honestly for two weeks. Second, the screen: a podcast and email at every bench keeps the exact load the walk was meant to relieve. Third, the route: a lawn ringed by traffic with one planted tree isn't what the data tracked 6.
No medical contraindication to the substance itself. The risk is the environment: in Lyme and tick-encephalitis zones cover up and do tick checks; move summer walks to morning for heat and UV; severe pollen allergy can flip the mood effect, so shift to off-peak hours.
What's overclaimed. "You need a real forest": urban parks carry most of the same effect 6. "It's meditation": the physiology shifts whether or not you try to be present 2. "It prevents cancer": tree oils raise anti-tumour immune-cell activity 10, but that leap hasn't been made in trials.

- — Time among trees sharpens attention by about as much as a stimulant does for ADHD. Two hours a week is the dose.
- — Part of nature's reset is simply unstimulated time — leave the phone and let the boredom land, and attention restores faster.
- — Time outdoors among trees also delivers the bright outdoor light your body clock is starved of — both wins ride on the same walk.
- — Exercise for mood works better outdoors. Two hours a week in real green space adds its own measurable lift.
- — Grounding's modest sleep effect aside, simply spending two hours a week in green space is the better-evidenced move.
- — Meditation calms the mind indoors; time in nature does much of the same work for people who can't sit still.
- — Getting your morning light outside is easiest in a park or garden, which doubles as your nature dose.
- — A walk in a park stacks two wins — the movement and the green space — into one free habit.
