Sleep is the cleanest win. Older adults with insomnia slept 84 minutes longer on nightly juice than on placebo, and woke less in the night 1. A serving carries a tiny dose of dietary melatonin, about 85 micrograms, and you can measure the extra coming out the next morning 2. The worse you sleep now, the bigger the move; a good sleeper feels little.
Exercise recovery is the densest evidence. Marathon runners who loaded up beforehand got their leg strength back faster and hurt less 3. Pooled across 14 trials the effect is modest but consistent, and it shows up only after high-damage bouts like marathons or heavy lifting, and washes out for easy sessions 4.
Inflammation markers move; the feeling doesn't always follow. Three months of daily juice lowers C-reactive protein in older adults 5. But when the test was knee-pain relief in osteoarthritis, cherry beat baseline and tied the placebo 6.
Pick the dose to the goal. Concentrate and juice are equivalent; the shot is cheaper, gentler on the stomach, and far lower in sugar.
Concentrate runs about $20 a month; ready-to-drink juice costs five to ten times more for the same active dose. Capsules exist and work for travel, but most evidence is in liquid form.
A small lever that compounds. First week or two, if you sleep badly, you wake up 20 to 40 minutes earlier feeling rested; a good sleeper may notice nothing. In a training block, the workout after a hard one hurts less than expected.
Over months, high CRP drops a notch on your labs. Over a year, the nightly sleep gain adds up to roughly an extra week of nights, and you stop noticing it as the juice and just notice you sleep reasonably well. Register it like creatine or omega-3: useful and cheap, never the thing that makes or breaks anything.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
- It treats gout. The dose-ranging trial in gout patients found nothing at any dose over 28 days 7. An adjunct, not a substitute for medication.
- It's a melatonin alternative. A serving has about 85 micrograms; a sleep tablet has 1,000 to 10,000. It works through the polyphenol matrix, not a big melatonin hit.
- It's a healthy energy drink. A glass is about 30 g of sugar, the same as a soda; the win is the bioactives.

Tart Cherries (Montmorency)
Concentrate dosing runs $15-25 per month; ready-to-drink juice is $50-200 monthly. Lower end is trivial; upper end approaches minor.
30 mL concentrate diluted in water 1-2 times daily, or an 8 oz juice glass — trivial routine, requires only refrigeration and remembering.
Two clean RCTs (Pigeon 2010: +84 min total sleep time on PSG in older insomniacs; Howatson 2012: increased sleep efficiency and urinary melatonin) plus 2023 systematic review confirm a consistent 20-85 minute duration effect via dietary melatonin and tryptophan-pathway IDO inhibition.
Multiple replicated small RCTs across sleep (Pigeon 2010, Howatson 2012), exercise recovery (Howatson 2010, Kuehl 2010, Hillman 2021 meta-analysis of 14 trials) and inflammation (Chai 2019, Howatson 2010) with consistent direction, but the strongest gout RCT (Stamp 2020, 5-arm dose-ranging) was negative and industry funding skews much of the literature.
Faster muscle recovery after hard exercise (Howatson 2010, Hillman 2021 meta-analysis SMDs ~0.4-0.6 for soreness/strength) and lower CRP at 12 weeks (Chai 2019) are real but modest day-to-day wellness gains.
Lower chronic CRP and oxidative stress (Chai 2019) contributes marginally to long-term skin and tissue aging; not a primary aesthetic lever.
Plausible knock-on effect via chronic CRP reduction and the broader anthocyanin-cardiovascular literature; no direct mortality data and the Keane 2016 BP effect is one small trial in early-hypertensive men.
Indirect via better sleep and faster training recovery rather than a direct stimulant effect; Kimble 2022 sustained-attention/fatigue improvement is a single positive trial.
Single trial (Kimble 2022, 3 months, middle-aged adults) showed improved sustained attention and reduced mental fatigue; not replicated, treat as preliminary.
