Every lever is modest alone; they work because they stack. Slower carbs plus 25 to 30 grams of protein per meal blunt the next dip 1 6. Inside a week of decent sleep and protein-led meals, the 3 pm pull shrinks and you walk past the snack drawer without noticing. The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"Sugar is addictive like cocaine." The human data finds no sugar-specific addiction distinct from palatable food generally; people get hooked on ice cream rather than plain sugar 13 14.
"Just swap to diet soda." Useful harm reduction, unreliable fix; sweeteners may not retrain the sweet-reward wiring, and some perturb gut bacteria and glucose tolerance 15.
"Natural sugar is fine." Honey, agave, and juice hit blood sugar just as fast; natural isn't a metabolic property.
Common failures: cutting sugar but nothing else, so an un-pulled lever (sleep, protein, stress) sinks you; skipping breakfast under a no-sugar rule, which enlarges the 3 pm peak; and strict-week-cheat-day cycling, which disinhibits harder than steady moderation 9.
