Three things share a bed that strangers slept in. Bed bugs are reddish-brown and apple-seed sized, and don't live on you. They hide in cracks within about five feet of the bed and crawl over to feed at night 1. They don't spread disease 2, but one fed female can start an infestation, and they hitchhike well. Second: dust mites in the pillow and mattress, whose droppings are the real allergen behind morning congestion 3. Third: a fungal load, with Aspergillus recoverable from pillows one to twenty years old 4.
Bathroom counter first, bed second. The suitcase never touches the bed or the floor near it while you check. That contact is the pathway you're preventing.
Two groups should build this into muscle memory. Frequent travellers, because a low single-trip risk stops being low once you multiply it across a hundred nights a year. And anyone dust-mite reactive or asthmatic, for whom the exposure is the pillow, not the bug: a packable pillow cover and a $30–60 sleep liner separate waking clear from waking half-symptomatic 7.
The best payoff is one you never see. The first few trips it feels self-conscious to flip a mattress corner with the door open. By the fifth it's just the thing you do between dropping the bags and finding dinner. The reward you'll never notice: the infestation that didn't happen because the dryer killed the hitchhiker in the laundry basket. For sensitised travellers it shows up inside the trip — you sleep through, your eyes don't water, and you arrive at the wedding rested instead of taxed by the pillow.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Star rating is no defence: pricey hotels get bed bugs at about the motel rate, since both rent to a stream of strangers. And about three in ten people feel no bite until repeated exposure sensitises them, which is why the bugs spread on hosts who never knew they were bitten. UV "detector" lights and ozone sprays aren't validated 5.
Three ways it fails: suitcase on the bed during the check (once it's touched an infested surface the trip may be lost); inspecting only the sheet, which is never where bugs live 1; and skipping the dryer on a trip that looked fine, since signs lag the introduction by weeks.

Hotel and Rental Bedding
The inspection itself is free. A silk sleep liner runs $30–60 once; a pack-along pillowcase is free from the home linen closet. Post-trip dryer heat treatment uses ordinary household machines.
About sixty seconds of inspection on arrival in each new room, one barrier item packed, and one tumble-dryer cycle on return. Triggered by travel rather than daily.
Bed bug ecology, harbourage radius, and lethal heat thresholds are well-characterised (Doggett 2012; Cooper 2015; Pereira 2009; Reinhardt 2007). Dust mite reservoir biology in mattresses and pillows is mature; direct allergen sampling of hotel mattresses specifically is sparse (Arlian 2001; Tovey 1981). The hotel-linen contact-dermatitis link relies on extrapolation from general contact-dermatitis literature with no hotel-specific trials. Composite is intermediate.
Real but bounded on-trip benefit: fewer bite reactions, fewer allergen-driven rhinitis/asthma flares in sensitised travellers, and avoided contact dermatitis from residual fragrance and detergent. The headline-stakes benefit — averted home infestation after returning from an infested room — sits on the same axis but as a tail-risk shield rather than a daily lift (Doggett et al. 2012).
Travellers sleep better when they are not scratching, sneezing, or running an anxious low-grade check on every itch. The effect is small for the general traveller and substantial for dust-mite-sensitised or asthmatic travellers, for whom mattress and pillow allergen load can drive overnight symptoms (Arlian and Platts-Mills 2001; Woodcock et al. 2006).
A short completed ritual on arrival displaces the diffuse low-grade unease about beds slept in by strangers and the post-trip dread following a suspected bite. Modest, but real — the psychological burden of confirmed bed-bug exposure is well-documented (Doggett et al. 2012).
