Your carpet and couch are reservoirs. Shed skin feeds dust mites, their dried droppings are the protein that triggers allergy, and shoes track in pollen and soot. That load sits deep in the pile where suction barely reaches. That's the case for cleaning it.
But the vacuum does most of the work. In carpeted homes, HEPA vacuuming alone cut dust-mite allergen by 81%; adding steam only lifted it to 86% 1. The gain also rebounds fast: vacuuming alone was back to baseline in four weeks, steam held out to eight 2. That extra month is what you're paying for.
And nobody has shown cleaning on its own reduces asthma or allergy symptoms. The one home intervention that cut kids' bad days was a bundle: bedding covers, HEPA vacuum, air filter, pest control. Carpet cleaning wasn't in it 3. It's reservoir maintenance, not a treatment.
First, decide whether you even need it. If someone in the house has confirmed dust-mite allergy, book every six months in the rooms they sleep and sit. Otherwise it's a cosmetic refresh, fine every twelve to eighteen months. Past that, soil builds up faster than an operator can recover.
The order matters: humidity, vacuum, and covers first, then the clean. Booking the contractor without the rest just pays for the same lift twice a year.
Day of, the room smells like nothing and the pile stands back up. If you're the allergic one, the real change is the week after: a morning you don't reach for tissues before your feet hit the floor, then a few nights of waking less stuffed.
That streak runs about four to eight weeks, the documented half-life of the drop 2. With the weekly vacuum and dry air in place, the next booking picks it up. Without them, you pay for the lift again and wonder why it never lasts.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
- "Steam kills the mites, so the allergy goes." Heat kills live mites; your trigger is last year's dried droppings, which only the extraction step removes.
- "Old carpets need it most." Opposite. Cleaning recovers over 61% of allergen from new carpet and under 30% from worn 7. Past ten years, replace or accept it's cosmetic.
- "Hard floors are obviously healthier." Contested; carpet traps particles out of the air. Floor type isn't the load-bearing choice unless you're mite-allergic 8.
Where a good visit goes bad: the technician oversaturates and the pad molds; you close up a humid house instead of running fans and AC; or soapy residue is left in the fibres and the carpet re-soils faster than before. Ask for a clean-water rinse-extraction as the last step, and keep indoor air drier than outdoor until the pile is dry to the touch 4.

Carpet and Upholstery Deep Cleaning
Booking and 2–4 hours of scheduling friction once or twice a year; the technician does the work and the home is unusable for 4–24 hours of dry time. Trivial-to-minor on the per-day amortisation.
US median $400–$700 per visit for a 1,500 ft² home plus $30–$80 per upholstered seat; at a 6–12 month cadence the annual spend lands at roughly $400–$1,400/year.
Allergen-reduction effect sizes are well-replicated across small field trials (Yu2008, Vojta2001, Causer2004); no randomised trial isolates professional carpet cleaning against an active control for respiratory symptom-days, and the Cochrane review of dust-mite avoidance writ large is null (Gotzsche2008). The mechanism is solid, the symptom-translation link is bundled-trial only.
For confirmed dust-mite-sensitised occupants, professional HWE produces an 80–95% allergen reduction (Yu2008, Vojta2001) and 4–8 weeks of measurably clearer breathing, less nighttime congestion, and fewer rescue-inhaler uses; the effect is real but transient and small in unsensitised occupants.
Sensitised occupants report reduced nighttime congestion and less mid-night waking during the 4–8 week post-clean window when bedroom carpet and upholstery are deep-cleaned (Vojta2001); the magnitude is meaningful in the documented sensitised cohort and small or null otherwise.
Reduction of embedded PAH and fine-particulate loads (~60–70%, Yu2008) trims a chronic-exposure tail for children and pets in floor contact; the effect is small in magnitude and only material as one component of an indoor-air-quality bundle, not as a standalone longevity lever.
Indirect: a sensitised occupant who sleeps and breathes better in the 4–8 weeks after cleaning (Vojta2001) reports less daytime fatigue, but the effect rides entirely on the upstream sleep / allergy benefit and is absent for non-sensitised occupants.
Visibly cleaner home, removal of musty odours from accumulated soil, and the felt-freshness lift after a deep clean produce a real but modest mood effect; not anchored in clinical trials but consistent with hedonic-environment psychology.
