Paper reads deeper. On tests that ask for more than the gist, paper readers score a little better, one of the most replicated findings in education research over twenty years 1, 2. The pooled gap is roughly fifteen to twenty percent of a standard deviation. Small on any one test; it compounds across a degree.
Screens make you feel smarter than you read. Screen readers finish more often certain they understood, then discover they didn't; the gap is widest under time pressure and for long text you scroll 3.
E-ink is not a backlit screen. A Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo reflects light off the panel like paper, so visual fatigue reads about the same as a print book, well below an LCD tablet 4. On retention it sits close to paper, a small step behind 5.
Match the surface to the task.
What you get, and when.
- First week: you fall asleep about ten minutes faster after evening reading, and heavy screen days end with less gritty eye fatigue 6, 4.
- First month: less morning fog on days you read paper the night before, once the body-clock signal stops shifting 6.
- First year: retention shows. You can say what a book was about long after finishing, more reliably than one read on screen 1.
None of this is dramatic per session. Read dense material fifteen minutes a day for a decade and the medium has done real work on what you carry.
The frequency tradeoff. E-readers raise total reading hours, and more reading usually beats perfect. But across nearly 470,000 readers, leisure digital hours correlated only weakly with comprehension while print hours carried the strong effect 7. Treat e-reader volume as a bonus on a paper-first habit, not a swap.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Blue-light glasses don't fix evening tablet reading; swap the medium instead 6. Digital natives didn't catch up: the gap widened across the 2000s and 2010s, and kids' leisure screen reading tracks worse comprehension 7.
The phone is the worst reading surface: small, scrolling, notifications behind the text. Treat it as its own category. Paper-only purism for a digital job forces zero reading or wasteful printing; match the medium to the task.

Physical Books vs Screens
Library access is free; a basic e-reader (Kindle Paperwhite, Kobo) is a one-time $100–200 purchase; paper books are roughly $10–$20 each new with extensive used and secondhand markets. Annual incremental spend over what most readers already do is well under $50 for the choice itself.
Per-session decision: pick up the right object. No protocol, no daily ritual, no willpower beyond not defaulting to the phone. Marginal procurement friction (library trip, ordering paper) vs. instant download.
Five meta-analyses (Delgado 2018, Clinton 2019, Kong 2018, Salmerón 2024, Altamura 2023) converge on the comprehension finding; Chang et al. 2015 PNAS anchors the sleep finding with a tightly controlled within-subject crossover. Not 5 because two recent meta-analyses (Fontaine 2021, Li & Yan 2024) found smaller or null effects and the original Clinton (2019) author has publicly questioned the generalizability of her own result.
Three converging meta-analyses (Delgado 2018, g=-0.21; Clinton 2019, ES=-0.25; Salmerón 2024) show a small-to-moderate paper comprehension advantage for expository text, magnified under time pressure (Ackerman & Goldsmith 2011) and on desktop screens. Effect is robust across age groups and replicated under controlled randomization.
Chang et al. (2015) PNAS within-subject crossover (n=12, 14-day lab protocol): four hours of evening iPad reading delayed the endogenous circadian melatonin phase by ~1.5 h, suppressed evening melatonin, lengthened sleep onset latency by ~10 min, and reduced REM relative to reading the same duration from a printed book. Effect is medium-specific and reproducible.
Benedetto et al. (2013) measured significantly higher visual fatigue on Kindle Fire HD (LCD) than on Paperwhite (e-ink) or print across ~73-min reading sessions, using both objective blink-rate and subjective fatigue scales; AOA's CVS guidance documents the symptom cluster (eyestrain, dry eye, headache, blurred vision) affecting majority-prevalence in heavy device users. Swapping LCD reading for paper or e-ink reliably reduces these symptoms within days.
Downstream of the sleep and visual-fatigue mechanisms: Chang et al. (2015) demonstrated reduced next-morning alertness after evening LE-eBook reading, and Benedetto et al. (2013) showed measurable end-of-session visual fatigue on LCD. Heavy daytime LCD readers and bedtime tablet readers experience the energy drag; switching to paper or e-ink at the appropriate windows lifts daily vitality.
