The memory case is source-dependent. Twelve weeks of cow-brain PS at 300 mg improved recall in older adults with age-related memory slips, most in those with the furthest to fall 1, 2. Mad-cow fears pushed the market to soy, and plain soy PS at the same dose did nothing 3. What salvaged it was soy PS bound to omega-3 (DHA), which rebuilds the fatty-acid mix of the cow version and does show modest gains 4, 5.
The stress case is cleaner. PS quiets how loudly the pituitary calls for cortisol under an acute stressor. Resting cortisol doesn't budge; the peak after a hard workout or a high-pressure speech lands about a third lower 6, 7. Different job, higher dose.
Pick one protocol before you buy. They don't overlap.
The wins are real but quiet — nobody becomes unrecognisable on PS.
- Memory, three months in: the name that wouldn't come at dinner comes back, and the people who see you daily notice the slide has slowed 5.
- Athlete, ten days in: the wrung-out morning after a hard session is shorter, and your next session lands closer to plan 7.
- Speech day: you still get nervous, but the pre-stage wave is smaller and the evening after isn't a write-off 6.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"Soy PS works like cow-brain PS." Bottles cite the cow-brain trials, then ship the soy version that came up empty 3. "PS lowers cortisol." Only the spike, not your baseline; no stressor, no effect 7.
Clear it with a clinician first on blood thinners (weak antiplatelet activity), Alzheimer's drugs like donepezil (same cholinergic system), or in pregnancy (no data). Soy allergy: use sunflower-derived PS. Otherwise the profile is clean 8.
Why people conclude it does nothing: cheap soy PS for a memory goal (the null version); 100 mg expecting the cortisol effect; quitting at two weeks when the memory trials need twelve. Test one variable at a time.

Phosphatidylserine
One or two softgels with food daily. Trivial behavioural cost; the only friction is buying the right source (DHA-conjugated for memory) and remembering it.
Plain soy-PS at 100 mg/day runs ~$60-100/year; the DHA-conjugated preparation at 300 mg/day runs ~$200-400/year; the cortisol dose at 600-800 mg/day pushes $400-800/year. Most users land in the $50-500 minor band.
Multiple small RCTs in two distinct effect classes (cognition: Crook 1991, Cenacchi 1993, Kato-Kataoka 2010; cortisol: Monteleone 1992, Hellhammer 2004, Starks 2008); plausible membrane-signalling and HPA-axis mechanism; FDA qualified health claim (2003). But the largest dedicated soy-source cognitive trial was null (Jorissen 2001), trial samples are small, and the strongest cognitive data came from bovine-source PS that no longer exists commercially.
Direct memory improvements in elderly with cognitive complaint at 300 mg/day for 6 months (Kato-Kataoka 2010, Crook 1991 with bovine source); attentional improvements in ADHD-pattern children at 200 mg/day (Hirayama 2014). Effect is modest and concentrates in lower-baseline subgroups; healthy young adults have no direct trial support.
Reduced subjective stress and lower heart-rate rise to a mental-arithmetic stressor (Benton 2001); reduced self-reported distress during the Trier Social Stress Test at 400 mg/day (Hellhammer 2004). The mood effect is a stress-resilience effect, not a generalised antidepressant signal.
Subjective stress-distress fell in young adults under arithmetic load at 300 mg/day (Benton 2001) and in TSST subjects at 400 mg/day (Hellhammer 2004); the day-to-day wellness lift is real but small, and it shows up mainly in people who actually face cortisol-spiking situations.
Indirect: cortisol blunting after exercise (Starks 2008) and reduced perceived recovery debt translate to a marginal next-day energy effect in trained athletes. No trials of PS as a fatigue or daily-vitality intervention in the general population.
