The gap it fills is real. Among plant-forward eaters who don't supplement, B12 deficiency runs from 11% to 90% of vegans, highest in lifelong vegans and pregnancy 4 5. It banks only if you eat it most days; a sprinkle on Tuesday doesn't cover Friday.
The cold-fighting pitch on the front is weaker. The yeast beta-glucan trials that cut colds used purified capsules at hundreds of milligrams, not the food 6. Europe's regulator twice rejected the food-form immune claim 7. Buy nooch for the taste and B-vitamins; don't pay extra for the cold-season promise.
If you were quietly low on B12, the first three or four weeks of steady intake lift the floor on your afternoons. Brain fog you'd been blaming on the day eases; the sore edges of the tongue settle; the low mood that crept in over years just stops being there 4. In the kitchen, the salt shaker comes down on its own once nooch is the finishing move, because the dishes already taste done. Over a decade, staying in range keeps a plant-forward eater out of the group who develop irreversible nerve and spinal-cord damage from years of unnoticed deficiency 5.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Skip it on non-selective MAOIs (phenelzine, tranylcypromine, isocarboxazid): yeast tyramine can trigger a hypertensive crisis 8. Go easy with active Crohn's, poorly controlled gout, or a true yeast allergy.

B12 fortification chemistry and bioavailability of cyanocobalamin are well established (White 2022). Yeast beta-glucan and immune endpoints replicate across multiple RCTs of isolated extract (Auinger et al. 2013; Talbott & Talbott 2009) but EFSA twice rejected the food-form immune health claim on evidentiary grounds (EFSA 2011), and no RCT has tested nutritional yeast as a food for these endpoints. Genuine but small wellness improvement in plant-forward eaters who use fortified product consistently — closes a B-vitamin gap that, in deficient readers, drives fatigue, mouth-soreness, and brain-fog symptoms (Pawlak et al. 2013; White 2022).
B12 and the B-vitamin complex are direct cofactors in mitochondrial energy metabolism; deficient readers experience marked fatigue that corrects on B12 repletion. In the deficient-at-risk population the effect is real but moderate; in already-replete eaters it is near-zero.
Avoiding chronic B12 deficiency forestalls the pallor, glossitis, and the gaunt-tired look that long-term deficient vegans develop — small contribution, only via the B12 channel.
Avoiding chronic, undetected B12 deficiency prevents irreversible neurological damage and macrocytic anaemia over years (White 2022; Niklewicz et al. 2024). Real but small additive longevity contribution conditional on the alternative being no B12 strategy.
B12 deficiency produces brain-fog, paresthesias and cognitive slowing; preventing deficiency preserves cognitive function. Above the deficiency threshold there is no incremental focus benefit (White 2022).
B12 deficiency is causally linked to low mood and depressive symptoms in observational and intervention literature; repletion via consistent fortified intake plausibly contributes to mood stability in deficient-risk eaters (Pawlak et al. 2013).
