Two pond-grown algae. Spirulina is a blue-green cyanobacterium; chlorella is a true green alga. Both are dried into powder or pressed into 500 mg tablets.
The effects are modest and dose-dependent. At 5–8 g of spirulina a day for two to three months, a lipid panel drifts down a few points. Pooled across trials, total cholesterol fell about 47 mg/dL, LDL similar 1. Systolic blood pressure drops on the order of 4.6 mmHg 2. Chlorella moves the same markers, smaller 3. Halve those numbers for your honest expectation; the trials were small and ran in already-dyslipidemic groups.
Iron is the sharpest effect, and the narrowest. Anemic seniors on 3 g of spirulina daily raised hemoglobin about 1.2 g/dL over twelve weeks, enough to feel 4. Chlorella cut anemia in pregnancy 5. If your iron was already fine, neither adds anything you'd notice.
The vegan B12 claim is the one that misleads. Spirulina's "B12" is mostly a look-alike molecule your enzymes can't use, about 83% inactive pseudovitamin 6. It reads as B12 on a blood test while your real status quietly worsens 7. Chlorella carries a little real B12 8, but if you're vegan, take a B12 tablet and treat algae as a hedge.
If you take it, the dose is the part people get wrong. Two tablets a day is a fraction of what the trials used, which is why most people conclude it does nothing.
For every job these do, there's a cheaper, better-tested lever. Psyllium and oats beat them on LDL; potassium, exercise, and beetroot juice beat them on blood pressure; an iron-bisglycinate tablet beats them on iron; a B12 tablet beats them on B12. The case for algae is narrow: you're plant-leaning, you like one tablet touching several markers, and you'll pay for a clean brand.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Two errors sink most people. They underdose, two tablets taken occasionally, and blame the algae. And they dose heavily without checking iron first, so a deficient person is helped, a replete person gets nothing, and undiagnosed iron overload gets worse.
Detox: chlorella binds metals in animals but no human trial shows it lowers your measured body-burden 9. Superfood protein: a 3 g dose gives about 1.8 g of protein against a 50–100 g daily need; a boiled egg beats it.
Skip it with autoimmune disease (spirulina revs an immune arm that flares lupus and MS) 10, on warfarin (chlorella's vitamin K shifts INR — tell your prescriber) 11, with hemochromatosis, or with phenylketonuria (spirulina is high in phenylalanine).

Spirulina and Chlorella
Quality third-party-tested product at 3–6 g/day runs $15–40/month, putting a yearly course under $500 — trivial in supplement terms. Cheap bulk powder is even less but carries contamination risk.
Swallowing 6–12 tablets daily (at the typical 500 mg tablet size for a 3–6 g/day dose) with meals. Trivial routine, no lifestyle change, but more pills than most one-a-day supplements.
Two independent meta-analyses across two algae show real reductions in total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, and blood pressure at 6–12 weeks (Serban et al. 2016; Fallah et al. 2018; Machowiec et al. 2021), and iron-deficient cohorts gain ~1 g/dL hemoglobin (Selmi et al. 2011). Magnitudes are inflated by small-trial bias — call it a real but small daily-life improvement, mostly biomarker-tier.
Two meta-analyses pool ~30 RCTs across spirulina and chlorella with consistent direction (Serban et al. 2016; Fallah et al. 2018; Machowiec et al. 2021), but median trial n < 50, heterogeneity I² often >60%, no large multicentre trial, and headline effect sizes (LDL -41 mg/dL, DBP -7 mmHg) are too large to be true. Mechanism is plausible; the trial base is thin and mixed.
Antioxidant markers (SOD, GPx up; MDA down) shift with 4-8 g/day spirulina over weeks (Karkos et al. 2011), and modest cardiometabolic risk-factor improvements plausibly contribute trivially to long-term skin / vascular aging — but no aesthetic endpoint has been measured. Score 1 = marginal contribution, not a reason to take it.
Lipid and BP shifts in the right direction translate mechanistically to lower cardiovascular risk, but no trial on hard endpoints exists for either algae, and effect sizes at consumer doses are modest. Marginal contribution at best.
Hemoglobin rise of ~1.2 g/dL in iron-deficient seniors with 3 g/day spirulina (Selmi et al. 2011) and lower anemia rate in chlorella-supplemented pregnancy (Nakano et al. 2010) explain a real felt-energy effect — but only in deficient cohorts. Iron-replete adults should not expect a daily-vitality lift.
