Surfactants do the cleaning; they rarely rinse out perfectly, so a low daily dose stays in the fabric where a collar or cuff presses skin. The fragrance line isn't one ingredient but a blend of 50 to 200 chemicals, several of them known allergens, that evaporate into your home whenever you open the dryer 1.
The preservative is the quiet one. Most liquid detergent carries methylisothiazolinone (MI), which sensitizes skin at parts-per-million 2. Between 2010 and 2015, patch-test allergy to it tripled in European clinics before regulators cut the concentrations 3.
For most people the skin upside is small, honestly. When laundry does cause a real allergic rash, the fragrance or preservative is almost always behind it rather than the surfactant 4, and laundry liquids account for about one in twenty household contact-dermatitis cases 5. If your skin is calm, treat this as a light hygiene upgrade.
The real win goes to the reader with eczema (about one adult in ten), anyone patch-test-positive for fragrance (about one in fifteen 6), the parent of an itchy child, or the person chasing a mystery rash for months. For them, pulling fragrance and MI out of the laundry is a standard first move in the clinic, and the skin usually settles within weeks.
The whole change is one shopping trip and a lighter hand at the machine.
Give it a month. The first week shows almost nothing. By a month the dryer smells of nothing and you stop missing it, towels regain absorbency as the softener film strips out, and the vague itch on the back of your neck quiets down. For sensitive skin the real gift is diagnostic: with the fragrance and preservative noise gone, whatever is actually flaring you becomes findable. Dust-mite allergic sleepers feel weekly hot bedding in the nose within a couple of weeks 7.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"Natural" isn't gentle: citrus and lavender oils are common fragrance allergens 8. Softener doesn't soften; it films fabric, blocking wicking and absorbency. Baby detergent is optional; many baby products still carry fragrance 9.
Overdosing is the top mistake: excess detergent won't rinse out and feels stiff. If Free & Clear doesn't help, check the dose. Bio enzymes chew wool and silk; use non-bio. Under-washing allergic bedding undoes it all 10.
Hot water shrinks wool and damages silk, so use cold or a wool cycle for those. Oxygen-bleach detergents ("OxiClean," "percarbonate") slowly degrade the water-repellent finish on technical outerwear.
