Four separate biology stories share the same middle range. Above 60 percent, dust mites pull enough water from the air to breed; below 50 percent they dry up and die within days 1. Above 60 to 65 percent on a cool wall, mould colonises drywall and grout 2. And the middle band that starves both also tears enveloped viruses apart in mid-air, where dry air below 40 percent lets them ride longer in dried droplets 3.
Dry air also shuts down your own defences. The cells lining your nose and airways sweep pathogens out on a film of fluid that needs ambient moisture. Mice breathing 10 to 20 percent humidity caught flu harder and cleared it worse than mice at 50 percent, on the same dose 4. Skin runs it in reverse: dry air drains the barrier faster than it refills, and eczema flares 5.
Overlay the curves for bacteria, viruses, fungi, mites, and allergy symptoms and every one bottoms out around 40 to 60 percent 6. Hold a home under 50 percent for a couple of years and the mite allergen in mattress and carpet dust falls by 60 to 90 percent 1. And damp indoor air causes cough, wheeze, and worsening asthma in sensitised people 2 7. Household humidifier trials are still thin.
You can't fix what you don't measure. A digital hygrometer is ten to twenty dollars and lasts years. Most homes drift out of band in one season, so check in both.
What you'll notice.
- First week, dry home fixed: the sandpaper-throat mornings stop, the lip balm stays in the drawer.
- First month: the office cold skips you or lasts two days instead of a week; the eczema on your shins fades.
- First year: fewer winter colds; the kid with allergies reaches for the inhaler less.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
A humidifier is a warm tank of standing water. Left uncleaned it grows biofilm in days and sprays bacterial and fungal cells into the air you sleep in; humidifier lung and Legionella outbreaks both trace back to neglected tanks. Empty it daily, clean it weekly, skip essential oils.
Houseplants, a pot on the radiator, drinking more water, and HEPA filters don't move indoor humidity; hydration helps your body, not the air. And "cold air is dry air" misleads: heating cold outdoor air crashes its relative humidity, which is why winter homes read single digits.

Indoor Humidity
Hygrometer $10-25 one-time; humidifier $30-150; dehumidifier $200-400 if needed; energy and consumables roughly $50-200/year total for a household running seasonal correction.
Daily empty-and-dry of humidifier reservoirs plus weekly mechanical cleaning to prevent biofilm; monthly hygrometer check; non-trivial ongoing maintenance but a few minutes daily.
Converging mechanistic evidence (viral aerosol V-curve in Yang & Marr 2012 and Lin & Marr 2020; mucociliary/innate-immunity in Kudo et al. 2019; mite biology in Arlian & Platts-Mills 2001) plus aligned guideline bodies (ASHRAE 2022, WHO 2009, IOM 2004); large pragmatic RCTs on whole-house humidification outcomes are still limited.
Maintaining 40-60% RH reduces winter URIs (lower aerosol viral survival and better mucociliary clearance), reduces dust-mite and mould allergen burden driving asthma and rhinitis, and resolves morning sore-throat / nasal-congestion / xerosis symptoms within days of correction (Yang & Marr 2012, Kudo et al. 2019, WHO 2009).
Bedroom RH outside the 40-60% band degrades sleep through overnight nasal congestion, mucosal dryness, and thermal discomfort; bedroom air-quality crossover studies show reduced sleep efficiency and worse next-day mood under unfavourable conditions (Strom-Tejsen et al. 2016).
Low ambient humidity raises transepidermal water loss and disrupts stratum corneum lipid lamellae, producing visible xerosis, lip cracking, and dull skin in dry-winter homes; correction restores hydration within days but the visible effect is subtle in non-atopic adults (Engebretsen et al. 2016).
Sustained mid-range humidity protects long-term skin-barrier integrity and reduces cumulative xerotic damage in older adults, but the long-term aesthetic contribution is a side-effect of general barrier health rather than a primary driver (Engebretsen et al. 2016).
Indirect mortality effect via reduced respiratory-infection burden in vulnerable populations and reduced damp-building disease (mould-driven asthma); real but small at the individual level (IOM 2004, WHO 2009).
Marginal daily-energy benefit, mediated through fewer URIs and better sleep continuity in dry-winter homes; not a primary energy lever.
