You're not making new good feelings. You're recovering ones you already had. The good things happened; the negativity bias let them evaporate while the friction compounded 1. Scanning the week and naming them is the work. The sentence on why is the lever: it makes the moment stick. Generic listing, family, health, job, does no reappraisal and goes stale within days.
The honest read: small, real, replicated. Across many trials, gratitude gives a small lift in mood, a small dent in depression and anxiety, and a small improvement in sleep, versus doing nothing. Depression drops by about g≈0.29, anxiety by about g≈0.46 2. Compared against another reflective practice, much of the gap disappears 3; it's one good onramp among several. The sleep route is specific: it shifts what your mind lands on after lights-out, so the worry loop runs shorter 4. The "rewires your brain, 10% happier" pitch overstates it; the small-but-durable pitch does not.
The arc, honestly.
- First week: you sit down and realise you'd already forgotten things from Tuesday. That gap is the first effect.
- Two to four weeks: sleep onset shortens, modestly, and you wake one fewer time on average 4.
- Six weeks to three months: the low-grade dissatisfaction under the day thins. For couples, appreciation starts flowing both ways and the warmth lifts 7.
- Six months: the three-good-things effect on mood was still detectable at six months from a single week's course 6.
The lift is on the floor, not the ceiling: you don't get more peak moods, you get fewer hours of unnamed low-grade dissatisfaction.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Where it goes wrong. Generic listing (family, health, job) does nothing; if your entries could be anyone's, they're too vague. During acute grief or severe depression it can foreground the gap between prescribed and actual feeling; if it's making things harder, stop 1.
What the popular advice gets wrong. "Rewires your brain" rests on one fMRI study 8 showing a shift in activation, a long way from a rewiring. "Daily is the right dose" is backwards; weekly outperforms daily 9.
When to skip it. In clinical depression or persistent anxiety, gratitude is only an add-on to real treatment; get the treatment. The physical-health claims (inflammation, cortisol) show only pilot-scale signal 10.

Gratitude Practice
Five minutes once a week (or short daily entries) of writing; no equipment, no skill barrier, no logistical overhead. The discipline cost is keeping the practice from becoming formulaic — moderate but not high.
The strongest and best-replicated effect of the practice. Meta-analyses (Dickens 2017; Cregg & Cheavens 2021; Davis et al. 2016) converge on small-to-moderate gains in positive affect, life satisfaction, and modest reductions in depressive symptoms (g ≈ 0.29) and anxiety (g ≈ 0.46) vs inactive controls. Effects shrink against active controls — gratitude is not unique among structured reflective practices, but it does reliably move the dial. Seligman et al. 2005's 'three good things' effect held at six months.
Multiple meta-analyses across hundreds of trials with consistent direction (Dickens 2017; Davis et al. 2016; Cregg & Cheavens 2021; Boggiss et al. 2020); foundational RCT (Emmons & McCullough 2003) replicated across populations. Capped at 3 because effects shrink substantially against active controls and the field has few long-duration or scaled trials. Mechanism is plausible and partially replicated. Not Cochrane-level.
Across four meta-analyses (Dickens 2017; Davis et al. 2016; Cregg & Cheavens 2021; Boggiss et al. 2020) gratitude practice produces small but consistent improvements in self-reported wellbeing, positive affect, and a felt reduction in stress, with effect sizes around Cohen's d = 0.3 vs no-intervention controls. The pilot heart-failure work (Mills et al. 2015; Redwine et al. 2016) finds reductions in inflammatory markers and improved HRV; promising but not yet replicated at scale.
Wood et al. 2009 showed trait gratitude predicts sleep quality via reduced negative and increased positive pre-sleep cognitions; Emmons & McCullough 2003 (Study 3, neuromuscular-disease cohort) and Jackowska et al. 2016 (women, 2-week trial) replicated subjective sleep improvements. Effect is on sleep onset and perceived quality, not architecture; mechanism is interruption of bedtime rumination.
No mortality or hard-endpoint trials. Mechanistic and proxy signal only: small improvements in HRV (Redwine et al. 2016), inflammatory markers (Mills et al. 2015), and blood pressure (Jackowska et al. 2016) in pilot-scale heart-failure and stress samples. Speculative contribution via downstream effects on sleep and chronic stress; not load-bearing.
No direct energy effect; modest indirect gains via improved sleep onset and reduced pre-sleep worry (Wood et al. 2009) and a small lift in daily positive affect (Emmons & McCullough 2003). The mechanism is mood-and-sleep mediated, not metabolic.
