The smell is two sources. Pressed-wood pieces (particleboard, MDF) are glued with resin that releases formaldehyde for months. Foam pieces leak whatever didn't fully react during manufacture. The mix is called VOCs, and the headline compound is formaldehyde, a known carcinogen 1.
It peaks on day one and decays to about a tenth of that within a month 2. New mattresses gas off roughly four times faster than old ones 3.
Your body makes it worse. Warming the surface from a cool room to skin temperature lifts the emission rate about two and a half times 3. Cracking windows to double the air exchange roughly halves indoor VOC levels 4.
Kids feel it most. In a bedroom study of young children, asthma risk climbed with bedroom formaldehyde even below the safety guideline 5; pooled data put it near a twenty percent rise per ten-microgram increment 6. For a healthy adult it's mostly a week of headaches that track the unboxing date.
The whole game is collapsing the high-emission week into a low-exposure one. In order of how much each matters:
If you can't wait two weeks, an air purifier with real activated-carbon mass removes VOCs. A HEPA-only unit does not.
The change is the absence of a slow drag. Within two days of unboxing elsewhere, the worst of the smell and the headache happen to your garage. Within a week of ventilating, the room stops smelling new. Over the month, the new-place fatigue that used to last six weeks lasts three days, and a kid who woke up coughing stops. The long-run part is insurance you can't feel: a marginal cut in lifetime carcinogen exposure that only shows up across millions of homes.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
"Can't smell it, so it's gone": your nose adapts in hours; formaldehyde is only smellable at about five times the guideline. "Natural" and "non-toxic": unregulated; trust GREENGUARD Gold, CertiPUR-US, or OEKO-TEX instead. "HEPA handles it": HEPA catches particles, not gases.
Worst case: a vacuum-rolled mattress unboxed in the bedroom Friday and slept on that night, everything crammed into day one 2. Also common: airing one weekend when decay takes weeks, and cranking winter heat.
"Buy used" isn't a universal safe answer: foam made before about 2014 was loaded with flame retardants that migrate into dust for the life of the couch 8. Safest used option is solid wood, no foam.

Furniture Off-gassing
Mitigation itself is essentially free (airing, ventilation); choosing Greenguard Gold or CertiPUR-US-certified products adds modest price premium when relevant, often under $100 over the product's lifetime.
A one-time setup per furniture purchase: unbox in a non-bedroom space, ventilate for one to two weeks, run cool. No daily ongoing effort.
Acute eye / nose / throat irritation, headache, and fatigue during the first weeks of new-furniture exposure are well-documented (WHO 2010); mitigation produces a clear functional improvement in the high-emission window.
Mattress is in the breathing zone for ~8 hours nightly; Oz et al. 2019 showed body heat substantially amplifies emissions in the sleeping microenvironment, and unmitigated new-mattress smell disturbs sleep onset and quality during the high-emission window.
Plausible mechanism, multiple chamber studies of emission rates (Boor 2014, Oz 2019, Noguchi 2022), observational cohort and case-control associations with paediatric respiratory outcomes (Rumchev 2002, Jaakkola 1989, Mendell 2007); no RCTs of mitigation in residential settings.
Fatigue is a core sick-building-syndrome symptom and resolves with ventilation; the effect is real but modest outside high-emission contexts.
Controlled-exposure studies of VOC mixtures show increased reported fatigue and confusion plus measurable neurobehavioural decrements; effect is small but real in stuffy newly-furnished rooms.
Formaldehyde is IARC Group 1 and flame retardants are persistent / bioaccumulative, but population-attributable mortality from residential exposure at modern CARB-2 / TSCA Title VI concentrations is small for healthy adults (WHO 2010, EPA 2014).
Headache, irritability, and stuffy-room malaise are part of the sick-building-syndrome complex; symptoms resolve on leaving the building, suggesting causal contribution rather than mere coincidence.
