The fungus behind athlete's foot, usually Trichophyton rubrum, eats keratin and only takes hold when the skin stays damp long enough for spores to germinate 1. Its favorite address is the deep space between your fourth and fifth toes, the spot a towel skips. From there it burrows into the nail, which then reinfects the skin even after the rash clears 2. Foot odor is bacteria in the same niche. Drying it out is the treatment, not scrubbing.
Blisters track moisture too. Rubbing shears the skin layers apart, and a damp sock raises friction and speeds it up; switching from cotton to a synthetic or wool blend can stop blistering on the same route 3 4. About one in seven US adults carries a fungal nail infection, often unaware 2; athletes are overrepresented 5.
Dry between every toe after every shower. That one step does most of the work; the rest keeps the shoe from resetting the clock.
Under five minutes a day once it's habit.
The arc. Week one: the itch is gone by Friday, the shoe smell drops within two weeks. Month two or three: the skin between your toes matches the rest of your foot, and you stop reaching for the cream 5. Six to twelve months, if a nail was infected: a clear band grows in from the cuticle while the old plate grows out, slow at about 1.5 mm a month 2.
If you have diabetes, the stakes climb by an order of magnitude. Numb nerves mean a blister or a fungal crack between the toes doesn't hurt enough to stop you walking on it, and poor blood flow means it won't heal. About one in seven develop a foot ulcer, and those ulcers precede most non-traumatic lower-limb amputations 7.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Diabetes, neuropathy, or peripheral artery disease: inspect both feet daily including between the toes, don't soak in hot water or cut corns yourself, and call about any new sore within 24 hours 7.
Cotton doesn't breathe better — it holds sweat against the skin 4. Rounding toenail corners causes ingrowns. Don't pop a blister; the intact roof is a sterile dressing 3.
Three ways it fails: the towel skips the toe webs; same shoes every day, so the lining never resets; treating a fungal nail with cream alone, which leaves the nail as a reservoir 2.

Foot Care
Adds under 5 minutes per day once habitual (the deliberate toe-web drying step) plus a weekly nail trim; the only sustained behaviour change is the shared-shower sandal habit.
No composite RCT of 'good foot hygiene' vs. control, but component evidence is robust: paper-tape blister prevention RCT (Lipman et al. 2014), sock-fibre trials (Herring and Richie 1993), the Knapik military friction-blister review (Knapik et al. 1995), large epidemiologic surveys for tinea pedis and onychomycosis (Ilkit and Durdu 2015; Ghannoum et al. 2000), and Grade-B-anchored IWGDF guidance for the high-stakes subgroup (IWGDF 2023).
Resolution of interdigital itching, foot odor (pitted keratolysis-driven), and recurrent maceration discomfort within weeks of consistent drying and sock/shoe rotation; clearer felt benefit in athletes and pool users (Pleacher and Dexter 2007; Ilkit and Durdu 2015).
Clearing or preventing visible tinea pedis (scaling, peeling, fissures between toes) and early onychomycosis (yellowing, thickening) restores a visibly cleaner foot and nail; the effect is subtle for the unaffected and modest even in the affected (Ilkit and Durdu 2015; Ghannoum et al. 2000).
Long-term nail clarity and intact plantar skin preservation through prevention of chronic dermatophyte colonization; minor contribution to overall appearance trajectory (Ghannoum et al. 2000).
Marginal in the general population; substantial in the diabetic / peripheral-neuropathy / peripheral-arterial-disease subgroup where structured daily foot care is one of the five pillars of ulcer and amputation prevention (IWGDF 2023). Score reflects whole-population average, not the high-risk subset.
