Indoor life is a light deficiency you can't feel. A bright office is 500 lux; an overcast sidewalk is 10,000; midday sun is 100,000. Your eyes read those as different worlds, and being stuck in the dim one shows up as later sleep, foggy afternoons, flatter mood, and in kids, a wave of nearsightedness. The fix is free and it's outside. Twenty to forty minutes of open sky a day, best in the morning, covers most of the gain.

Your eye is a light meter wired into the rest of you, and outdoor brightness drives two switches indoor light never reaches. One sets the body clock: bright morning light shuts melatonin off cleanly and pulls that evening's bedtime earlier. The other keeps a growing eye the right shape. Bright light hitting the retina releases dopamine, and dopamine tells the eye to stop elongating, the elongation that becomes nearsightedness 1. Two unrelated systems, one input. That's why "go outside" keeps surfacing in research that has nothing else in common.

The kid finding is the striking one. First-graders given one extra 40-minute outdoor class a day came out with less new nearsightedness after three years: 30.4% versus 39.5% in controls 2. Pooled across trials, outdoor time cuts new myopia by about a quarter 3. It prevents rather than reverses — once a child is already in glasses it does little 4.

For adults it's sleep and mood. People sent camping with no electric light re-set their clocks about two hours earlier 5. Across 400,000 UK adults, more daily outdoor light meant less low mood and less antidepressant use 6; brain serotonin literally tracks the day's sunshine hours 7. A 10,000-lux light box matches antidepressants for winter depression 8.

Sleep moves first. Within a week of steady morning light, most people fall asleep earlier without trying and the alarm stops being a fight 5. By week two or three the mood floor lifts — not euphoria, just a normal Tuesday that stops feeling vaguely heavy, and a softer afternoon dip 8. For a child the payoff is an outcome that never arrives: the kid who'd have been in glasses by twelve isn't 2.

The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong

A big office window doesn't count: glass drops outdoor light roughly 10x, and the trials measured time outdoors, not window seats. Screens aren't the cause of kids' nearsightedness either; control for both and outdoor time is the stronger, independent factor 9.

Check with a doctor first with photosensitive epilepsy, lupus or other photosensitive autoimmune disease, xeroderma pigmentosum, or recent eye surgery without a UV-filtering lens.

The dominant long-run risk is cumulative UV: decades of unprotected outdoor work raise pterygium odds 2–7x 10. UV-blocking sunglasses and a brimmed hat for sustained midday exposure handle it.
