Three things happen at once when you settle into a screen, and fixing only one barely helps.
You stop blinking. Resting rate is 15 to 20 a minute; lock onto reading or coding and it drops to 5 to 7, more of them partial 1. The tear film stops refreshing, and in heavy users the surface dries into what looks clinically like evaporative dry-eye disease 2.
Your eyes hold one middle distance for hours. The muscle that focuses the lens and the muscles that turn the eyes inward stay contracted and fatigue. That's the eye ache, the temple headache, and the slow refocus when you glance away 3.
Your neck holds whatever the monitor forced. Too high tips the head back, too low pulls it forward; the stiffness and shoulder ache are the same bad setup, another muscle group.
Set the geometry once, then run the daily habits. The syndrome has three mechanisms plus a vision question, so the fix has four parts, and it only works as a package. Each part has evidence behind it: an accurate prescription cuts strain in over-forties 4, and trained blinking moved tear film stability from about 7 seconds to over 9 in a month 5.
The eyes settle first; the prescription pays the most.
- Days: gritty morning eyes soften once you blink on purpose and use drops.
- Same afternoon: a properly set monitor means the shoulders aren't at your ears by 3 pm.
- Weeks: tear film measurably steadier 5; a corrected prescription stops the headaches you'd blamed on the job.
What you're left with is the ache you stop noticing. The next thousand workdays cost less than the last thousand.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Blue light isn't the culprit: filtering lenses give no benefit 7. 20-20-20 was a memory device; break frequency didn't change symptoms when tested 8. Screens don't damage the eye 9.
The usual failure is doing one layer and quitting. The second is buying around it: blue-light glasses and screen supplements are marketed and inert 7. The third is drift, so re-check the setup every few months.
