Citrus does four things, and only one is the vitamin C on the carton. One medium orange covers an adult's daily floor, the cofactor for building collagen 1. The hesperidin helps the inner artery wall relax 2. The pectin in the pith pulls a small LDL drop out of your cholesterol 3. And vitamin C converts plant-bound iron into a form your gut grabs easily, doubling what a bowl of lentils delivers, but only at that meal 4.
The artery effect is the cleanest. Men given half a litre of orange juice a day dilated their arteries better after meals, and systolic pressure fell about 3.6 mmHg. A plain hesperidin capsule carried most of the effect, so the flavanone did the work, not the sugar 2. Over decades, women in the top fifth of flavanone intake had a fifth fewer strokes, with citrus carrying most of that intake 5. The cold story runs the other way: daily vitamin C does not stop adults catching colds; it only shortens them, by about 8% 6.
One piece of citrus most days, eaten whole when you can.
By the end of the first week, plasma vitamin C sits in the saturation range. You don't feel it. The next cold you catch runs a day shorter than one hitting a chronically half-empty status 6.
Inside a month, if you pair the juice with iron-rich plant meals, your gut is pulling roughly twice the iron from each, and the afternoon fatigue that used to eat your day lets more of it through.
Over the decades, the payout is the stroke number: a fifth fewer, in the group eating the most citrus flavanones 5. You never learn which one you skipped.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Grapefruit, pomelo, and bitter (Seville) orange multiply the blood level of dozens of prescription drugs three to five times for days, via furanocoumarins that disable a gut enzyme; spacing the dose doesn't help 7. Sweet orange, mandarin, lemon, and lime are clear. Highest-stakes: some statins, some blood-pressure and heart-rhythm drugs, transplant immunosuppressants. Check your list with a pharmacist 8.
"Vitamin C prevents colds": it doesn't; it only shortens them 6. "All citrus interacts with drugs": no, only grapefruit, pomelo, and bitter orange. "Lemon water alkalises the body": the kidneys set pH. What lemon does is raise urinary citrate, useful against calcium-oxalate kidney stones 9.
Grapefruit on a new statin can end in muscle pain and a hospital admission; switch the fruit or the statin 8. Afternoon juice misses the iron window; it has to share the plate 10. All-morning lemon water bathes teeth in acid and erodes enamel; drink it in one go and rinse 11.

Citrus Fruit
Among the cheapest fresh produce per gram of vitamin C; a piece a day is a few dollars a week. Trivial cost burden in the developed-world food economy.
Peel and eat. The only effort is remembering it, and the timing rule for the iron-absorption use (consume with the iron-bearing meal).
Mixed by question: vitamin C status and the iron-absorption amplifier are textbook-solid (Hallberg 2000); endothelial-function effects are RCT-supported in small short trials (Morand 2011, Buscemi 2012); the stroke/mortality signal rests on prospective cohorts with no RCT confirmation against iso-nutrient comparators (Cassidy 2012, Joshipura 1999); the cold-duration effect is meta-analysed and modest (Hemilä 2013); the grapefruit / CYP3A4 interaction is overwhelmingly documented (Bailey 2013).
Cosgrove's cross-sectional NHANES analysis (n=4,025 women) tied higher dietary vitamin C intake to fewer wrinkles and less senile dryness on standardised photo-grading; the mechanism (cofactor for prolyl-4-hydroxylase in collagen synthesis) is well-established. A real but slow contribution over years, not a transformative aesthetic shift (Cosgrove 2007, Pullar 2017).
Morand's randomised crossover showed 500ml/day orange juice improved flow-mediated dilation by ~2.1 percentage points in four weeks; Buscemi reproduced a similar lift in higher-risk adults within a week. Plus the modest cold-duration shortening (~8% in adults, Hemilä 2013) when status was suboptimal. Real, named, but small in magnitude.
Cassidy's Nurses' Health cohort linked the top quintile of flavanone intake — dominated by citrus — to a 19% lower ischaemic-stroke risk; Joshipura's pooled cohort showed ~25% lower stroke per additional citrus serving/day. Cohort, not RCT; the citrus-specific increment over total fruit-and-veg is plausible but unconfirmed causally (Cassidy 2012, Joshipura 1999, Aune 2017).
No detectable visible effect within days from a piece of citrus a day. Vitamin C is concentrated in skin and supports collagen synthesis, but the dietary route at RDA doses does not produce a short-term mirror change — topical L-ascorbic acid is the surface that does that (Pullar 2017).
No direct daily-energy effect in iron-replete adults. The one operational pathway is the per-meal vitamin C iron-absorption amplifier (Hallberg 2000, Cook 2001), which can lift energy in iron-deficient plant-eaters specifically — a narrow lift, not a general one.
