A bath mat is a wet towel that never gets to dry. The top is touch-dry while the underside stays saturated, feeding on the skin you shed and the warm humid air. What grows is the usual indoor mould trio plus whatever rides in on bare feet.
The damp itself matters: visibly damp rooms track with more cough, wheeze, and asthma flares in people already sensitised 1. Dust mites die off below about 50% humidity, and a soaked mat keeps a bathroom above that for hours after a shower 2.
The sharper case is foot fungus. Live athlete's-foot spores stay viable on bathroom surfaces for months 3, and roughly seven in ten people get athlete's foot at some point 4. In a household where one person has it now, the shared mat is the reinfection route.
The number that decides your laundry setting: washing at 60°C with detergent clears dermatophytes, and 40°C does not — heat-drying alone fails too 5.
Which mat you own decides the routine. Both fabric and porous stone work; each has one failure point people miss.
Humid climate, hard water, or no exhaust fan: halve every interval above.
A dedicated floor towel is the cleanest option of all: dry the floor, drop the towel in the wash, done. Almost nobody keeps it up. Sealed teak or cork slat mats stay dry themselves, yet trap water underneath unless it can drain, which rebuilds the problem.
The fine print — when to skip it, and what people get wrong
Looking clean means nothing: a mat that rinses to normal colour can carry weeks of biofilm. Stone mats are not antibacterial either. They dry the surface fast, and a clogged one colonises like anything else.
The classic miss: one person has athlete's foot, the shared mat gets washed at 30°C, and treatment keeps relapsing off the mat nobody suspects. A saturated mat that no longer dries is worse than no mat.

Bath Mat Hygiene
Fabric mats $10-$40 replaced every ~2 years; diatomite mats $25-$120 lasting 2-5 years. Per-year cost is trivially low ($10-$40/year). No ongoing consumable cost beyond detergent.
A weekly 60°C wash for fabric mats, or air-drying plus quarterly sanding for diatomite. A few minutes per week. The friction is remembering the cadence and tolerating the 60°C requirement, not the time itself.
Reduces a chronic mould / bacterial reservoir in the bathroom and removes a common chronic mildew smell. For atopic and asthmatic readers, the bath mat is one of the controllable damp sources in the IOM 2004 damp-housing literature linking damp interiors to upper-respiratory symptoms and asthma exacerbation. The mechanism is real but the magnitude attributable to the mat alone is small.
No randomised trial directly tests bath-mat material against any clinical endpoint. The evidence is mechanistic and indirect — IOM 2004 on damp interiors and upper-respiratory symptoms, Arlian et al. 1999 on dust-mite humidity thresholds, Akhoundi et al. 2022 on 60°C laundry clearing dermatophyte conidia, and the dermatophyte fomite literature (Ajello and Getz 1954; Leung et al. 2023). Mechanism is settled; magnitude is not.
